Columbia vs. Johns Hopkins vs. Northwestern: Seeking Input

I'm currently deciding between Columbia, Johns Hopkins, and Northwestern for my MD. While Johns Hopkins is my top choice due to its strong research and programs, I do have concerns about safety in the surrounding area. I would also like to know some current students' experiences regarding mentorship and clinical experiences. I'd appreciate any guidance or insight to help me decide.

What are the financials? I would follow the money here.

Hopkins has a mild edge on prestige on the other two but it's not enough for me to say you have to go there.

I personally would probably choose Hopkins if $$ is equal - P/F clinicals (for now, I know it might go back), I think Baltimore is a doable city and probably comparatively safe to where Columbia is in NYC (NW is in Streeterville which is the nicest of your options) plus the slight edge on prestige which will set you up well in case you want something competitive or want to stay in academic medicine.

I think you should give some more information about your thoughts on each institution regarding research, curriculum, location. At NU mentorship is pretty good, we are assigned a college mentor which is just a way to divide us into smaller groups. We meet every week for an hour. You will also have an ECMH preceptor all four years which is every other week during pre-clincials. As far as research mentorship, its also pretty easy to find faculty doing research.

If cost is equivalent, Hopkins.

Just don’t poke your nose in unnecessary business and you should be good. Downtown Chicago and Washington heights will have their fair share of characters too.
