I have been lucky enough to be given acceptances to both Columbia and Stony brook yesterday. Now im faced with the decision of choosing between the two.

One of my biggest pros for stony brook is that I am a New York resident, so i would be paying in-state tuition (about 1/3 the price of Columbia). I am not so sure how I feel about such a small class size (around 40 student per class)... has its benefits and drawbacks.

My pros for Columbia is obviously its reputation and its Ivy League. I've also love the opportunity to move into NYC (even if it means moving to the UWS). Also, I feel like you have access to many more opportunities and networks through Columbia. However, I would be spending about triple the amount of money here than living in and attending stony brook.

Both have great and reputable programs. I am also not sure whether or not I would want to specialize yet. I am so proud of myself for getting into both of these institutions, but I am so torn between which one would be the right one for me.

HELP!

comments are welcomed and appreciated!!

if you have money (or family will be able to help you out) go for columbia!

if you an average joe then go for stony!!!!

both are great schools and wont go wrong.

either you can live in the middle of nowhere, long island OR in manhattan. I think the choice is obvious.

SB all the way. I know personally, I would hate having a ton of debt.

Cost of attendance at SB is about 67k/year compared to Columbia's 90k/year. However, also consider the fact a bachelors degree at Columbia is going to cost you 61k/year vs. like 25k/year at Stony.

Just my two cents.

The amount of money owed by graduates of Stony Brook in 2011 was $89,000 after graduation for ALL four years. I think 67K/year is way off. Correct me if I am wrong.

Do not confused Upper West Side with Washington Heights... they are very different and you would love living there instead of Washington Heights.

This is incorrect. The average debt for the 2012 class was $ 181,474. I highly doubt it went up almost 100k from one class to the next.

Another aspect that I thought was unique about Columbia was its excellent medical education. It's reputation would also mean better and more opportunities, connections and networks.

Do you think the expensive tuition and cost of living outweighs these benefits?

Why are we talking about the cost of a bachelor's degree here? 😕 Didn't he get into dental school? That means he'll likely have his bachelor's before matriculating.

Go to the cheaper school, unless you will be coming out of this with no debt. If you look at what dentists have to say on these forums, almost all of them say to go to the cheaper school. The price difference in this case is quite significant.

Yes, both are great programs, and you will be able to specialize no matter which school you choose to attend. The difference will be how many years you are going to spend repaying your loans and how long you have to wait to do things like start your own practice or buy a house/apartment down the line.

Do you think the expensive tuition and cost of living outweighs these benefits?

Not if you're financing your education via loans.

I'm a student at Stony Brook now and absolutely LOVE it. Living in the city is fun until you look at your bank statements every month and see that you're totally broke from cost of living. You have plenty of time to live in the city after graduation! Save that $$$ and come to Stony! You wont regret it

I know this is an older thread but I am thinking about applying to stony brook, its my top choice and being a nys resident I would LOVE to go to Stony. OP can you please tell me what your stats were and what timeline you followed for your application, it would be very helpful and I would really really appreciate your feedback! thanks 🙂
