Columbia vs. UAB

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I'm 99.9% going to Columbia but I wanted to get everyone's take on which they think is the better option. Due to scholarships both are the same cost. So which one is the better option and why?

I haven't been to either school but I'd personally take the Ivy League when cost isn't an issue. I know UAB has a great research and clinical program, but all schools will prepare you well clinically to some degree. I heard Columbia's getting new facilities soon and I know their didactic curriculum is very very strong. Plus the connections you make at a school like Columbia are valuable.

They are getting a new clinic! It's going to be done next August. We got to see a mock up of it at the interview which was pretty exciting!

UAB is probably one of the best state schools in the country, in my opinion. If you go to Columbia, it will definitely inhibit you later on with the debt load. If you want to specialize, at the end of the day, you will match if you go to UAB or Columbia. You have to decide if the cost is worth the name.

Due to scholarships they are both the same cost for me!

He has scholarships though.

I say UAB. Throw everyone for a loop.

I'm not sure I agree with you on that one but I respect your opinion

The one plus on Birmingham is the lower cost of living/being able to have a car

Hey there. I know we've talked on other threads but I'm in a similar position. Unfortunately, I didn't nail a scholarship from Columbia in order to make it an equal cost as UAB though. I'm still in the process of deciding between the two, but i have started to lean heavily towards UAB primarily due to the price difference. If both schools were the same price for me, I would go to Columbia in a heartbeat. I grew up in AL and I go to UAB for undergrad, so I am ready for something new, and what better place than New York? I believe both places are excellent academically, although UAB may be slightly better clinically. Columbia has the name, but UAB has an absurd amount of research money coming in, which I know you're interested in. It just comes down to what you wanna do with your dental degree. I'd love to hear more of your thoughts though cause I've been accepted to both and thought about making this same thread. Crazy to see that someone else is having the same dilemma

UAB.

UAB currently has nation's #1 dental research program and has 5X more research funding than Columbia.

https://www.nidcr.nih.gov/grantsand...talSchools/GrantstoDentalInstitutions2015.htm

They talked about that at the interview, big plus for them but being honest it's gonna take more than that to convince me to pass up Columbia haha. My biggest gripe with them is that they aren't P/F. I really want to go into Ortho and while more research funding is good, unless i'm top 10 in the class it really won't make a difference. At Columbia I can still do good research and I don't have to worry as much about my class rank.

Thank you for posting thought! I wanna make sure I know everything going into this decision.

How did you get one already? You already filed fafsa?

I'll PM you!

EDIT: a bunch of people are messaging me about the scholarship. It's a special one for URM and they have next to none of them. They have other need based scholarships though that will come out with FASFA!

Haha that list does have a lot of truth in it but it includes Ensley and other neighborhoods that have 95% of the problems that are nowhere near the school or the Birmingham night life. It definitely isn't the safest city, but I haven't had any problems whatsoever in the last 4 years here. I have heard some crazy stories from friends and classmates though

Out of curiosity, how progressive is Birmingham? Is it similar to any other southern town or is it kind of like any other major city in the country?

I would say Birmingham is extremely progressive. Yeah its in the heart of Alabama so we still say y'all and roll tide to everything, but Birmingham is huge on diversity, equality, progression, etc. and UAB I feel is the main leader in it. They've definitely done a great job with all the problems that the old mayor created 10+ years ago. It's a very interesting place cause its considered a "big city" but is only just north of 200k people. Definitely has a little bit of everything, which is nice
