Actually I am having this exact same issue now. All your pros and cons are weighing heavily on me right now and its rlly tough to choose columbia or ucsf. I have an interest in specializing but columbia will be 100,000 dollars more expensive. My columbia name is nice and my family rlly support me going there but I'd prefer the san fran location. My parents offered to pay for the 100k difference if I go to columbia so the cost is not an issue at the moment. What do you think?

Go to UCSF and have your parents put that 100k towards your loans or a practice when you graduate. The Columbia “name” won’t mean much to patients who will probably never ask where you went to school.

If 100k isn't a big deal for them then you should go.

Go to Columbia if you want to do OMFS. Otherwise, UCSF all day.

@otterboi

Both UCSF and Columbia are great schools to specialize from.
Like another has mentioned, that 100k can go towards your future practice or your future home. That, plus your
"gut feeling" of preferring SF, leads me to believe that UCSF may be the better choice.

People who know that Columbia is an ivy also know that UCSF is a top university affiliated with excellent graduate programs.
This is from my experience, so YMMV.

Of course, if your heart is suddenly set on Columbia, then you should attend Columbia.

As the other poster said, if you’re trying to do OMFS or take advantage of any of the dual degree programs, go to Columbia. Otherwise, since you prefer San Fran go to UCSF.

I don’t think it’s the patients people are using the name for, it’s for speciality programs and dual degree programs. Only way the name of the school could help you is for the big shot cosmetic dentist who advertise NYU etc.

UCSF. Coming from the east coast, I had the choice to go to an Ivy or UCSF and was glad I chose SF (cost-wise and experience). You have two great options in hand with high chances of specializing wherever you choose. Go where you think you'll be happier.
On a side note, UCSF has a plethora of research experiences that will definitely give up boost in your application for specialty programs. That is one thing that will help you stand out in cases where there is no rank. If you look further down the road with matching into residencies, UCSF specialty programs are much more affordable compared to many private schools.. that is if cost is something you are considering.
tldr; you can specialize from both schools. Go with your gut feeling. It's a good reflection of how you felt from your interview day experience/the people you met there/how you'll fit in.
