Not much has been posted on here regarding the new school in Mesa, Arizona. Has anyone heard from since the secondaries went out? I was curious as to when they might be interviewing. I have heard December, but of course we all know that they are behind. If anyone has called, what are they saying?😕

I think it is hard for the people of SDN to know what is going on with COM-Mesa because like you said they are so illusive and hard to get a hold of, and even when you do talk to them they are vague about when they are going to start interviewing. I think the school is going to be set up in an interesting way, it just worries me that it has taken them so long to get their act together. Also, when I last talked to them they said if worst comes to worst they would give back our application fees if for some reason the school doesn't get off the ground this cycle. I have been trying to get ahold of the admission staff to make sure that my new MCAT scores were recieved, but have yet to hear from them. That was a few days ago and that has been my most recent atempt to contact them. 😕 😡

I think just the fact that they are saying something along lines: "if we dont open up, or something goes wrong we will give you back money" is a bad sign. They are not confident.😕

I talked to the admissions office yesterday, finally. She told me that they plan on doing two days of interviews in December, probably on the 14th. They are only going to do a few interviews because they want to see how the process is going to go and "get their feet wet". Then the majority of the interviews will begin in January. Let's hope that this is all true! 😀

What do you guys think about the set up for II III IV years? I wonder how will that grouping of students and sending them off work.

According to the person I talked to, they will split up the groups with a system that is similar to residency matching. Of course, it will be in there own little way, but similar. So, you aren't necessarily guaranteed your top choice, but it sounds like it might work. She also said that years 2-4 are strictly at the CHC you choose. She said that you rarely go back to main campus for anything.

I just wonder how is that going to work out for students. It seems a bit comlicated.

I am not exactly sure if this how it will work, but if they modelled their match from the Kirksville process, what will happen is that a student will choose their top few choices, say six sites, and they will randomly assign locations through a lottery process. If it works out anything like the Kirksville match, about 80% will get their first choice, about 10% their second choice, at most of the rest their third, fourth, or fifth choice. Only a small fraction are left with their sixth choice or do not match at all.

Well, everyone would have to match somewhere cause there is no class in Mesa after the first two semesters.

I talked to admissions a couple of days ago and I got them to email me a "tentative" list of 15 sites that they will pick the final ten from. Anyone interested?😀

YES!! please... i talked to admissions and they told me it would be december before it was on their website. that's awesome they emailed you a tentative list.

ok, I just copied and pasted what the admissions lady emailed me. Nothing is finalized yet and they are still waiting on contracts, but this at least gives us all an idea of possible locations. Enjoy! 🙂

"Here is a list of 15 we are considering. We have narrowed them down to 10 - contracts are out and we're just waiting for them to be returned before releasing the information."

Seattle, WA
Oregon
Visalia, CA
Salt Lake City, UT
Canyonlands, AZ
Casa Grande, AZ
Tucson, AZ
Colorado Springs, CO
Ohio/Kentucky combo
Alabama
Beufert, SC
Marshfield, WI
Bronx, NY
Brooklyn, NY
Hawaii

"The second year is spent in small group settings learning additional clinical presentations at a Community Health Center campus. Third- and fourth-year students will complete their clinical rotations at Community Health Center campuses, associated hospitals, healthcare providers, and other select healthcare institutions. Osteopathic principles and practices are integrated throughout the curriculum, and the osteopathic manipulative treatment program is designed for primary care applications." (aacom.org)

I apologize for asking so many questions, but I have some concerns regarding this whole set up. I understand that matching to different locations for clinical rotations will be great, but I am really concerned about basic sciences.
How are science classes held in second year? How someone who matches, for example, into Casa Grande AZ will obtain that knowledge? Or is that site only for rotations? I see that the locations above have allopathic schools, not osteopathic. Does that mean that we will be mixed in with allopathic students for second year classes?
Also, it is stated on their website that they want people with intentions of going into primary care. What if we choose to go into other specialty and not primary care, will we be able to do it?

This may sound a bit confusing what I am asking. Anyone else has an input?

Here is something else I have in an email from the admissions office:

"Didactics will be conducted at the community health center campus in a similar fashion to the process on the main campus in clinical presentation. There will also be some interactive television times as well."

It sounds like basic sciences will be conducted at the CHC location you are at.

I think the second year will be alot of television lectures held at the public health centers we are assigned. I am not sure how learning OMM will work since I think that is a lot of hands on learning, not television learning. From what I got from the open house there will be much more emphasis on clinical skills than on basic science and lecture material. Also, at the open house they specifically told us that individuals not interested in primary care should not apply. This school is going to be very unique in its complete focus on public health and primary care. 🙂

Great, but clinical skills are not going to help me pass the boards after II year.
Although I am interested in primary care, I am going to rethink sending my secondary there.

Just got the secondary today..finally....anyone get a interview invite yet?

Nope. Haven't heard anything and I turned in my secondary a few weeks ago. If/when they start interviewing I don't think it will start until maybe January? 😡

I also haven't heard anything and I turned my secondary in about 3 weeks ago. Even though the admissions person I talked to had mentioned possibly doing a couple of interview days in December, I don't think it will be until January.

Bu Bum Bump. 😀 😀 😀 😀
