Just two points:

(1) These include positions only offered through the Match. Some programs offer spots pre-match that are not included in these numbers.

(2) For specialties like Surgery and Internal Medicine, there is not an individual breakdown offered in the current data that delineates between preliminary and categorical spots. Each year, there are a lot of preliminary spots in each field that go unfilled, therefore artificially inflating the numbers and making it appear that a specialty did poorly in the Match.

We have to wait until the final tables come out to get a better picture of things, especially #2.

Yeah, after talking so some people who didn't match I found the following, which we will all hear next week.

Surgery Categorical had seven openings in the country, and only 1 in the west.

It look like it was actually a very competetive match

I just looked at the list, and you're right. It was just 7. Makes a big difference when you subtract out those prelim spots, doesn't it?

And its actually only 6 gen Surg spots as the UCLA spot is actually a combined Plastics one.
