combined pm&r/IM residency

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
anyone know if these programs exist? thanks

They certainly do. Go to the AMA FREIDA website and you can look them up. They are 5 years in length. I think there are only 3-5 of them. That's about all I know about them.

is it worth doing a combined IM/PM&R residency? what would be the pros and cons?

only if you are for sure you want to be heavily involvd in inpatient rehab, and post acute care. The advantage is then you would be very flexible and desirable in a position where you work at SNF, LTAC, IP rehab, NH, etc. Tts not for everyone...

If you want to do something like pain, sports, etc, then you are wasting a year or two because the IM skills won't make a hugge difference in your skillset.

They actually for some reason don't list them on the FREIDA website. I've been looking for those a lot, as well. I've only been able to find 1 place that still allows for a dual residency with PM&R/IM.

I shouldn't tell you! Jk, jk.
It's the one in Buffalo, NY. 5 year program.

there are three PM&R/IM docs I know - they all do very little inpatient now. 1 is an administrator, 1 does a lot of cancer rehab - gets a lot of outpatient referrals from oncologists and surgeons, and 1 does cardiopulmonary rehab research. the IM cert is prob a big part of what opened doors for them. And even if you want to do sports medicine - with the current push to require an ACGME accredited fellowship to take sports boards - having IM might look good to apply to family practice-based sports medicine fellowships where you mihgt have to cover inpatient calls or general med clinics during hte fellowship. the way i heard it that might be the biggest problem with FP accepting PM&R grads to their fellowships. I only see having dual certification as opening more doors, not being a waste, although you have decide if the time and work is worth it to you to add another two years onto your training -that is the con if you could have landed a 'real job' 2 years earlier.

I thought the IM/PM&R residency programs were only 5 years(?), I think it should only be a year longer unless Im missing something.

I'm not so sure if the combined program is offered any longer. I dont see it in FREIDA, and its not an option that I can pull up in ERAS as far as I can see.

The ones that they USED to offer were 5 years. That breaks my heart to know that the Buffalo one is also no longer an option. So currently, there are no more dual residency programs with Medicine at all??
Has anyone ever tried to contact a school and ask if they would consider letting you do a dual residency in something (such as PM&R) that the school currently does not offer? You think that's even worth a shot?
