Hi everyone,

I’m wondering what my chances for matching IM or peds are with these two scores? I’ve checked out the charting outcomes but I’m concerned that my scores especially my USMLE is too low. I’m was an average student in first 2 years of med school with a couple EC. I have no location prefrence and willing to move anywhere. Should I forget about IM and peds and focus on FM with my scores?

if you read charting outcomes you know that your odds are good for either of those specialties. Dont trip. Over 90 %+ chance for peds, and 95%+ for internal medicine. If you dont match, it wont be because of your scores. Did you actually read charting outcomes?

Your chances for matching both are pretty decent. You may have to target community programmes rather than big University places but you'll be fine nonetheless.

Thank you for replying man, I read a lot of your posts on the USMLE and COMLEX experiwnce threads while studying a couple of months ago. Yes I did read them but I just got a little discouraged since I was at the lower end of the bars for matching with my USMLE score especially. Would you consider my USMLE score to be helpful to my application even though its below average? I’ve just been reading that when a DO student has USMLE, it pretty much is the only exam that matters. My COMLEX is average for this year according to score report and my USMLE is below average so thats why I’m kind of afraid my USMLE might not be so helpful. What do you think?

I think you passing USMLE score is you saving grace. You aren't going to be matching at any top programs, but you will match at a community program somewhere for sure. Just apply broadly. I would rather have your stats than a 550-600 and no usmle

Thanks you for the response. Is FREIDA the best resource to be using for looking up residencies? Any other websites that I should be using to make a list of residencies?

that or the AAMC website has some info as well

You will match into low tier university IM programs or community programs. Cant speak about PEDs cause I dont have any experience in that arena except I know one of my classmates that matched at JHU peds program with 232 step1.

You're pretty decently set for mid and low-tier peds programs. You broke 200 and 500 which is the major floor cutoff

Do you have any specific programs that you can reccomend that fall under the low tier IM category? Also what resource should I be using to stratify programs into tiers?

Thats great to hear, I have my peds rotation in a few months and I’m excited about it. What mid tier programs do you think are worth applying for? I have no location preference but close to a bigger size city would be awesome.

I can't think of them off the top of my head, but almost any except CHOP, John's Hopkins, Harvard, Cincinnati, certain ones in Cali. They're not a whole ton that are unavailable to you with those scores

Starting from this year, Freida categorizes program into university, university/community, and community programs. This is my wild guess, but tiers are probably categorized into the following:

1) Upper tier - university programs in desirable locations (think seattle, boston, new york, etc...)
2) Mid tier - university/community programs in desirable locations or university programs in undesirable locations (i.e. the Midwest)
3) Low tier - community programs

Nah. There are some community programs that are excellent. Hurley medical center, in Flint, for example, has a high USMLE cutoff and their community health program compares to children's national, in DC.

Plus, Dr Hanna-Attisha, who was the water crisis whistle-blower is the PD there

According to Freida, it’s considered a university/community program. However, I doubt that the average USMLE over there is a 220 considering that it is a program in Flint, MI.

Freida just provides a borderline guide. If you want a definite answer, contact the program.

In a similar boat here with lvl 1 and step 1 scores, but just got my comlex 2 scores back and got 66 pts lower than lvl 2 and that puts me in sub 500 range. Idk what happened, but how badly does that look for me? I am interested in Med/Peds as well as just Pediatrics. SHould I even bother applying to med/peds at this point with this disappointing lvl 2 score?

Also did not really plan to take step 2 due to timing, but now I feel like i need to study again for boards and try to take Step 2, even though scores will come out after Sept 15 (opening day for ERAS).
