Do the COMLEX / USMLE information reflect directly what is taught in the classroom? Or do you have to learn how to take the test like the MCAT? It would be nice if it is one big final exam but I'm not sure.

Taking the MCAT, it seemed like there was a lot of studying to do that was not directly taught in undergrad. The questions were more like conceptual, applied to new things questions that you had to sit down and learn from scratch (using old concepts though). That explains the 3.9's with 21 MCAT scores.

Is this how the COMLEX / USMLE are like too?

You have to learn how to take the test. Integratve learning skills are the best types of skills to have for these exams, and being able to relate thyroid disorders to energy metabolism all the way down to the cellular Na+/K+ pump is an example of the type of knowledge that is not necessarily 'taught' but rather must be learned.

I think the USMLE is very different than MCAT. MCAT is more about abstract thinking, USMLE is more about regurgitating an enormous number of facts. One could do extremely well on the USMLE just by memorizing a ton of things, it doesnt require as much higher order thinking than MCAT.

idio,
for those of us that are test challened, how do you reccommend doing what u described?

Do as many questions as you can. Every good question is like an oportunity to learn a new topic, or learn something in a way that you hadnt thought about previously.

QBank, BSS, NMS, Appleton and Lange and BRS are the old standby resources, but the best one, as far as being most like the USMLE is the Robbins Review of Path question book. Also I like Rapid Review series. Check these books out if you can, and just work the questions and read the answer thoroughly. This will help you greatly in your test prep.
