How much time does it take to prepare for the COMLEX-PE? I've been on family medicine for a week, doing a lot of H&P's and focused physical exams. Obviously I haven't covered everything. Problem is I didn't have the cash to register last semester and now it seems there is NOTHING until november or december. Unless I want to take the test next week, lol. I anyone's experience, have slots opened up over time? Or is it pretty much a done deal?

I'd love to know too. My school wants us to take it by October, but when enrollment numbers keep going up and up and they are still only taking 10 people per day, it's not going to be possible. Right now the first date open is December 8th.

Hey guys, just thought I'd chime in that I've only studied a little bit prior to this weekend. I used "COMLEX Level 2-PE Review Guide" by Mark Kauffman. Read through the chapters then reviewed about 20 cases by myself and 30 cases with a partner. I also reviewed the video and bulletins posted by the NBOME.

I also called friends who had recently taken it and asked if there was anything that tripped them up or that I should be concerned about.

Seems to be a pretty comprehensive review. We'll see if it works today.

Good luck to everyone else studying for this. 👍

Just took it yesterday. There's really not a whole lot of special "prep" you need to do. You've basically been doing this stuff over the past year and a half..... histories, physical exams, coming up with an assessment and plan, etc...

I browsed through the USMLE step 2 CS book for some samples and advice in regards to counseling patients for specific issues/situations. The only thing I found remotely useful was to touch up on some OMT since I don't use it often on rotations, and even then OMT on step 2 is basic and limited to non-HVLA/thrust techniques.

In regards to the dates, take it early if you can. It just gets more annoying when you're doing ERAS stuff, interviewing, and organizing a match list to worry about taking this test. Also, during winter the weather can really make it a crappy trip. Was supposed to fly out today and was stuck in Philly after this winter storm came through and grounded a bunch of flights.

That said, dates did seem to open up over time so keep checking.

Slots do open up on occasion. This week I scheduled for an open slot in March, that wasn't there a few days before.

Does anyone know if there is any OB/Gyn or Pediatric material on this exam? I don't have experience in either yet, and wonder if that would be a problem. (I'm guessing it won't, as you aren't supposed to do pelvic exams on anyone, and I imagine they don't have children acting as standardized patients... but if anyone knows otherwise please let me know!)

I wish I banged my head a few times to dumb myself down for this exam.

Does your school have a similar standardized patient evaluation program? If so, you're already overprepared. If you read any Clinical skills prep book even once, you're REALLY overprepared.

I'm not kidding...you are.

The one thing that most of us probably suck at doing is the one thing that we shouldn't have to do as a doctor, FAKING REALITY and performing rudimentary THEATRICS.
