comlex score

There are very few DO anesthesiology programs so I would probably just call the programs and talk to their residents.

I would highly recommend applying for allopathic anesthesia because the DO programs are very small and largely inactive in research, complex cases, etc. You might find yourself in a program of 1-3 residents per year.

The allopathic anesthesiology world is DO friendly so come join us. 🙂

Not only are there very few DO gas programs, the info provided via the "AOA Opportunities" web page is rather wanting, esp when compared to FREIDA (the AMA analog). Unless this has changed since I was an applicant, I doubt that it has, your best option is the old fashioned telephone for the DO programs...and still not a bad option to approach the MD programs either.

Furthermore, GasMan2003 makes a valid assertion, in my opinion, regarding the quality of the AOA gas programs. And, just as he claims, I found them ACGME programs...all of them that I applied to...to be very DO friendly.

To your original question:

For AOA programs - I dunno. I did not apply to any of them. My impression is that AOA programs are far more reliant upon who you know & networking/audition clerkships at their program. So, if one of them is your heart's desire, I would do an elective there.

For ACGME programs, I would say you needed at the minimum of 70th %-ile on COMLEX.

By the way, I read on the NBOME web site that DO graduates-to-be will be able to apply to DO programs through ERAS. I just breezed over the article; so I cannot supply details, but the info is readily accessbiel on the NBOME web site.

Ouch, really? My scored 51% on my COMLEX...USMLE scores not back yet. Being that I'm Navy, and won't match until after my GMO tour (1-3 years post-internship)...any chance that my Step 2 and Step 3 scores will weigh in? (I'm planning on doing much better on those).

As far as AOA programs go...unfortunately any 4th year rotations I do probably won't help me when I attempt to match 3-4 years later (aaagh...the downfalls of HPSP).

Anyone know how competitive the Navy's programs are? I'd imagine they're just as competitive as other ACGME programs 🙁

Your USMLE scores will have the most weight if you apply to ACGME programs. I wouldn't be too discouraged though. It sounds like you will have a well-rounded, more experienced background at the time you apply for anesthesia.

The way I have seen ERAS used the programs set the parameters for candidates they are searching for (USMLE score, etc) and then those candidates they can mass-email for interview offers. USMLE step 1 is probably more reliable/valuable but if you did very well on Steps2 and 3 it would likely help your situation. Don't be scared to call programs and talk with the coordinators. If you get to know them well they can help you get interviews. Once you are at interview level you are on the same page with everyone there.

How about a COMLEX I score of 588 (85th percentile), 25th % class ranking, no USMLE, no research, no honors? What type of programs should I realistically be shooting for (names please)? Any advice would be great!! thanks!
