My situation is this, I am a post-bac student and because of my full time work schedule its really hard to find suitable class times at my local university which is very much geared toward first time non working students. However there is a pretty reputable community college nearby which would be wayy easier for me to attend (timewise). However I want to know if this may affect me negatively. I am interested in AZPOD and Barry for my school choices. Does anyone know if in the case of a post bac student CC credits for science are acceptable?

What courses are you planning on taking at this CC? Is it going to be most/all of your pre-req's? I did the majority of my work at a 4 year undergrad and one my science pre-req sequences (2 semesters) at a CC. They didn't say anything about this at the 8 shools interviews but I am not sure if what would happen if I took more classes there.

Just curious, are you applying for next cycle (Class of 2013)?

How did you narrow down you school choices to Barry and AZPOD? They are very different schools with arizona being much more selective (admissions wise) than Barry.

Both schools are in great locations and nice sunny weather. I would not base a school on selectivity alone...I am also interested in those two.👍

Miami Shores is a dump but at least the beach is close. Glendale seems nice. I do agree that the weather is a plus for most of the year...however the hot/humid south florida summers and blazing june/july/august desert heat have to be rough though.

Personally, I liked AZPOD much more than Barry. Even though it's just graduating its first class this year the board scores are great, high admissions stats, nice facilities, great vision for the program, take classes with DO's, very "open" 4th year, etc. It reminded me of DMU's younger hotter sister (school).

My Barry interview day was confusing because the tour guide did not really know much about the pod program. Furthermore, it seems like they don't really have high admissions standards and accept (interview at the least) nearly everyone who applies. I at least expected to be interviewed by a DPM or basic sciences professor, not a lawyer (very nice guy though). Just coming from des moines and AZPOD, the Barry interview was kind of a joke. Maybe the program itself is decent but I did not get a good impression from the interview day there.

Barry's interview was a joke, I dont disagree.

If I do go to Barry, I am planning on living away from miami shore, maybe 20 mins away.

Did you previously have your BA/BS when you took the CC credits? The reason I stated my question this way is because I know that some schools have different leniancy towards CC credits post bac vs. traditional.
Not to be curt, but I chose the 2 schools for different reasons and I don't want the thread to get off topic like its starting to now.

Sorry pops I did not mean to stray off topic. I don't have my BA/BS yet (graduating this june) so I took some CC classes while at my 4 year undergrad.

What classes would you be taking post-bacc at a community college??? Is it going to be like bio 1 and 2, general chem, orgo, physics? For what class year are you applying? (2012/2013). I would honestly call the schools and personally ask someone there to see what they say. I don't think Barry would have much of a problem with this but AZPOD has very strong admissions stats (I've heard higher than DMU but not sure) and it may not be looked highly upon.

😀sorry, its just that i know how things can get on SDN ( i just don't want things to take a bad turn, that's all 🙂 . But I was thinking about taking my Bio and Physics pre-req's at a CC and all of my Chemistry classes at a 4 year. I am hopefully applying for the 2013 class but due to health problems it may be 2014.
I didn't see any info on either website so I think i'll just or email to get an answer and post the responses just in case there is anyone else in a similar situation.

i got accepted to DMU and I took chem2, physics1&2 at CC....they didnt have any problems with it, most likely because my upper level classes in microbio showed i had a firm grasp of the intro classes

I took all of my premed prereqs at a community college (although it is ranked in top 10 in nation for ccs), I was not a science major....and I got into both DO and POD school. I wouldn't sweat it. Just make sure that you do well and score high on the MCAT. And there is nothing wrong with calling admissions to find out their opinions directly!😀 Good Luck!

Thanks, that's great to hear. I have to wait until the holidays are over though to call the schools. You go to Scholl am I correct? Where else did you interview, did any of them question you about the CCs?

Hi guys, I said I'd get some info for others in my situation and I did.

I first emailed Barry University and they replied that community college credits are fine with them.

Arizona stated that they have students that have taken all of their pre-requisites at a CC or some that take a combination at 4 year and CC. Susanna said that they do not have any limit to the number of courses that you can take at a CC but she told me that if you do elect to take all of your courses at a CC to make sure to do well. She also said that they do not look down upon CC credits and that she understand especially that they understand that many post-bac students have trouble with University schedules so they do take that into consideration. I told her my plans to take Chem at a 4 year and the others at a 2 year and she said it was no problem 4 year or 2 year the point is to just do well in your classes.

I did my senior year of HS at a CC. I then got my associates in science there. I did my gen. chems there and my gen. bios. I did physics at a 4 year and organic chem. I have a total of 71 credits at the CC and 82 at a 4 year... (transfering = more credits then expected for a bachelors). I'll let you know how I make out!
