Hi all,

It was brought to my attention by a premed advisor that since many of my pre-requisites were completed at a community college I would probably not be able to apply to many medical schools due to the fact that many schools don't accept sciences courses from a community college - I was wondering if someone can tell me about their experiences applying to med school with pre quesities from a community college. Thanks

I'm an MS1 at Loma Linda University and was accepted with over two years of Community College Credit. I took a full year of General Biology and Chemistry there. In addition I did Calculus and a bunch of other "filler" classes you need for a degree. I did however transfer to a four year institution and obtained all my upper division biology classes there. They didn't seem to balk about me being at a Community College at all. The only thing they were concerned with was grades. I can't speak for all medical schools, but I applied to several places and none of them hasseled me about my years at a community college. As long as you work hard, I don't see why you should have any trouble. My only word of caution is to limit the amount of science you take there b/c the labs tend to be a lot less organized/structured. Stick to the basics if you can. Good luck! :luck:

It doesn't matter. In fact, I always suggest to undergrads that they do as much at comm coll as possible to boost the GPA. It's important though that you don't split any class, ie taking a semester of chem at comm coll and 2nd semester at university.

   gotta love the premed advisers... wow I feel terrible for the students who actually fall victim to these people and don't pursue their dreams (perhaps not knowing who else to contact or about SDN). Good thing you asked b/c that's some seriously false information. 👍

Hmm, hadn't heard that before...I took my first semester of organic chem at a community college and my 2nd one at university and had no problem getting interviews/acceptances for med school. I was at the community college for only a semester, though...I think it's fine to take some prereqs there, but I think (at least in my case) the fact that I did most of my work at a university helped my application. Who knows, though? 😕 🙂

Some do not accept community college credit such as MCW I believe. The majority accept CC credit although 4 year is prefered most likely. Before applying, check the school's website to see.

I did OChem, physics and anatomy/physiology at a community college and I never had a pre-med advisor.

I got asked about my choice of doing courses at a c.c. at my DMS interview. I told the interviewer the truth: after graduating from a very large university, the small class sizes and excellent teaching at a c.c. were refreshing, as well as being cheaper. Furthermore, my MCAT scores showed that I'd mastered the information.

FYI, I did my pre-med a few years after graduating from college. One of my best friends did her sciences at the same c.c. and then transferred to a 4 year. She, too, got into med school on her first try.

Keep your hopes up and ears closed when it comes to dealing with pre-med advisors!

All i can say is THANK GOD for community college. Did many of my prereq requirements there and I'm a student at UTSW.

Proud Alumnus of Oklahoma City Community College...and currently an MS1 at OU. 😛

Advisors totally suck, avoid them like the plague. IF THEY KNEW HOW TO GET INTO MED SCHOOL, THEY WOULD BE THERE ALREADY!!!
