Hi All,

I was reading through the osteopathic medical college information book and noticed that there is a great emphasis on community involvement. I would argue I have had some in the past (hospital volunteer, worked with under-privileged kids for a summer, taught science in an outreach program), but I haven't really had much lately. This is mostly because of my schedule (full-time work, part-time work, taking one or two classes, and weekly travel (a little less currently)).

However, I'd like to add an event that is flexible and establishes that I still deeply care about my community (which I do). I plan to add volunteering in a hospital to the list (probably Fridays after work starting in October), but I would like to add something non-medical as well. I wanted to get opinions on what you feel would be a good activity of for me (Here is the list of potential choices: http://www.ci.redwood-city.ca.us/residents/communityopportunities.html).

The Top 4 candidates are:

1) Citizen's Police Academy: I have always been interested in the police force and would like to learn more. The downsides are that the schedule may not work for me to attend class and this is more classroom time, which might not really show a great commitment to the community.

2) American Youth Soccer Organization: I would love to do this. I have two nephews and two nieces who play soccer. I have also always wanted to coach soccer. I may have schedule problems here. I have contacted them to ask what their expectations are. I have Physics lab on Saturday and an MCAT prep course on Sunday, so we shall see.

3) Teen Pregnancy Coalition of San Mateo: This is the one I'm leaning toward. I know a lot about the health education and feel I can contribute. I also think this would be good with an erratic schedule, but I'm not exactly sure what the commitments are.

4) Project READ. This is a possibility, though I don't know about how well I can commit. If it's a few hrs a week on a regularly schedule day (Friday after work is the best day since I'm not likely to be traveling and maybe I can do this until I start volunteering at a hospital in October (or just do this and drop the hospital gig)), this works.

Any input on the activities listed above and whether or not they would be good community involvement activities or alternate suggestion for activities that fit under the umbrella of "community involvement" are welcome.

yeah it's big in DO school. we do tons of it! I don't know how much of it is actually giving you a break from studying or to put the school's name out in the community. the school in the community. the whole purpose of service is to show a humanistic side and make your app a little more well rounded. any of those would be good, I always advise to do your volunteer work is outside of medicine. whichever one you choose, make sure you enjoy it.
