community programs vs. university/university affiliated ones

If I don't have any plans for fellowships in FM, does it really matter for future job prospective to do my residency in a community vs university affiliated programs?

I had ivs at certain strong community programs compared to the university affiliated ones but I am not sure how I should rank them. Any advice is greatly appreciated.

I always say, rank according to preference. Where would you like to be if perceived preside wasn’t a factor?

Then add in “where am I likely to get the best/most comprehensive training”; and pick based on a hybrid of those two considerations (the mix depends on you).

As a current resident that had the same problem as you I'm gonna strongly recommend you rank unopposed community programs over the university programs. Especially if you're ranking east coast universities.

Meh, it’s not that simple. I went to an unopposed east coast university program...training was excellent!

There are some "hybrid" options out there, too. The program I went to was technically "university affiliated," but the university itself is >1 hr. away, so it's basically an unopposed community hospital.

Yeah I'm in full agreement, to clarify I was mostly getting at the poster ranking an unopposed program above an opposed university program

Question is too broad, it would depend on the particular program. Generally speaking, the program with university affiliation might have better funding and might have more access to didactic resources (again, depends on the program).

My program was less than 10 mins from the Med-school and the other residency programs. But we were unopposed and we’re olanted in a community hospital away from the other residents.

I preferred this setup because the academics /didactics were top shelf; and I got to work with medical students regularly. Better environment overall IMO.

I would also go with university affiliated, as they likely have sub specialty training available which you could electively rotate through vs. not having this opportunity in a non-affiliated, comm site.

I think this really just depends on your location. I’m in a city with a lot of university and community programs. My program and the other community programs all have any specialty under the sun to rotate through. We do all of our sub-speciality training with specialists associated with our hospital. We have hospital grand rounds, research happening, teaching med students, etc, the same that happens at university programs. That seems to be the norm in my city. I guess if you’re talking about things that are super-specialized like a dedicated liver transplant surgeon, then no we don’t have that, but that’s not necessary for general FM.

I think it comes down to individual programs not strictly community vs university.
