I'm trying to get a prelim position in IM.

What are the pros and cons of community Vs. university hospitals?
would I be at a disadvantage to get neurology fellowships by doing IM prelim in a community hospital?
do neurology programs take this into account also to select you?

Don´t worry...your fellowship or residency won´t be affected by the place you went for your internship.

Neuro programs probably won't take this into account, although you really should have a neuro program selected at the same time you are picking a prelim. However, even if you applying directly for a PGY2 spot as an intern, it is hard to imagine anyone rejecting your application because you did your prelim year at a community hospital.

For fellowships, I don't think anyone ever asked me where I did my prelim year.

So I'm under the impression that you apply to the IM premlim year and the Neuro residency at the same time. So what if you get into an IM prelim year but you don't match into a Neuro residency? Is it possible to do your IM prelim year and then apply again for a Neuro residency? Would you then be applying through the match or oustside of the match?

Anyone have an answer for my questions above??? Or want to direct me to a forum in which this has been previously discussed. I tried looking but couldn't find any information.
thanks!

From past discussions on this forum, it is more likely that one would match into an advanced neurology position without matching into a preliminary program. However, if you matched into a preliminary program without matching into neurology, you would need to scramble this year. If that didn't work, you'd have to look for programs with open PGY2 positions due to someone dropping out, and mak a deal outside of the match.
