I can't tell you how much my bicycle commuting has improved my workdays and my life in general.

It blows my mind that I used to get in a car and sit in traffic for a large part of every workday of my life. What wasted time!

Do you shower when you get to work or is this a leisurely bike ride? I wish I could do this where I live but unfortunately I'd show up as road kill. I have an intense phobia of cars when I'm riding on streets bordering on pathologic. I'll only bike on multi-use trails or mountain bike trails.

Agree with the above, and so does science.

My TOP priority in choosing a home for the last 10 years has been proximity to work. I always walk or bike to work and my life is MUCH better for it. There are few things that can spike my blood pressure like traffic. Don't give yourself cardiovascular risk factors in order to save money on a house or to make an extra $20/hour.

I do have access to a shower at work, but didn't really need to use it even in 90 plus degree weather, since I never bike in my scrubs, and always change out into them from my nike/underarmours and just towel myself off.

If you're that scared, just use the sidewalk! I know you're not supposed to, but nobody uses them in this country anyway!
 
45mins-1hour is my personal max. It’s usually fine unless you are working a string of overnights
 
Agreed on bike commuting or walking. I have no interest in commuting at all, certainly not more than 20 or so minutes. It's an insane waste of time.

Mrs. Fox and I are headed BACK to Asheville, NC after next week for four days because we got "rained out" of mountain biking after just being there last week. If anyone wants to talk MTB, please - I'm all ears. I want so badly to get "back into it".

Asheville was bizarre. We had fun, nonetheless.

I live 10 minutes from my hospital. No traffic. One of the perks of living in a smaller town.

Back when I was in the military, I had about a 40 minute commute depending on the gate traffic. I can't tell you how many times after a night shift I was falling asleep at the wheel. Personally, anything more than 20-30 minutes, post night shift, can get really dicey.
 
Fantastic 10mn bike ride down the mountain to my main. But we also cover 2 FSEDs that are about a 30mn drive from my house. Those would be 1h bike ride each way in scary traffic... no way! Although sometimes I fantasize about getting an electric bike for those commutes, as lanesplitting would probably save some time.

30mn is about the max commute I would put up with in theory, especially after a balls to the wall overnight. Any longer than that and I'd be sleeping in the call room a lot.
 
30 minute drive would be my max. Agree with comments above... I biked pretty much all of residency (about 15 min each way) and now as an attending, and it will make your life significantly better.

I'm still waiting on this Asheville thread. That's a great FM meeting there every December that I've been doing since residency.

Husband has been talking more and more about "retiring up north." Not anywhere north of the Mason-Dixon, mind you, but "the Carolinas." His brother lives about an hour from there, and seasons happen there. So... First he actually has to accept the idea of "retiring." I'll believe it when I see it.

I figure the Asheville area is probably where we'll end up as a compromise. Never been mountain biking there, but have done several hikes on or near Grandfather Mountain and the Linville area.

This is home for my family and will be migrating back to southern appalachia in the next couple of years. Mountain biking in the area is world class FYI, not hyperbole.
 
It depends if its 8 hour shifts then less than 30 preferably. I drive 1.15 minutes for 12 hour shifts 6-8 times a month but I don't work nights and if I work the evening shift I get a hotel and stay over. The hospital pays my hotel.
 
Currently have a 45 minute commute time, no traffic. That can go to 1 hour, 10 minutes with traffic. Not my choice, can't wait to go to another hospital. Definitely have a concern after night shifts about this driving. Did not realize how much of an impact this had on happiness until it became an issue.

Meh. Went to school in Johnson City. Residencies in Spartanburg, SC and Greenville, NC.

Greenville, SC has Asheville beat. You can be in those mountains in an hour, but better medical climate. And you can be residency faculty.

Yeah but house prices in Greenville are just crazy at the moment. We're talking over $200 per square foot.

If you haven't been back in the last 5 years, Spartanburg is almost a whole different place. I grew up there and barely recognize if anymore.

Asheville has gotten the same way, $200 sq/ft is norm in the area. Johnson City OTOH you could build a dream home around $130 sq/ft. Have a good friend who lives south of Asheville and works at Spartanburg Regional, seems very happy there.

Glad to hear it, as my hospital just got bought by Spartanburg Regional.
