Commuting between DC and Baltimore?

how feasible is this? im applying to Maryland for OMS residency this year, and should i hypothetically match there, circumstances might require such a commute (wife would be theoretically working there). any input is appreciated.

Its possible but it takes a good 45 minutes each way. The traffic into Baltimore is fine in the mornings on I-95 North but can get pretty busy on the way back into DC from 4-7pm. I knew people that made the commute from DC to UM dental school a few times a week because they hated Baltimore that bad (don't blame them either). I would live in DC if I were in your shoes. Its a really cool city.

As a (hopeful) OMS resident i would feel kind of weird living so far away from the hospital.

you should worry about getting into A program. some programs have requirements 20 min to hospital. if you work 14-18 hrs, do you want to drive 45 min after? spend 1.5-2 hrs in a car that could be with family.

yeah definitely, the goal is obviously to match somewhere, but i need to consider the logistics of each location in a way that would balance both my and my wife's career goals.
And i personally like Maryland's program which is why i'm thinking this through.

metro + MARC for public transpo to and from dc. thing is, they keep "normal people hours" and would not be an option for you early in the morning (or deep into the evening).

otherwise, look at columbia or ellicott city, both in howard county and reasonably accessible to bmore and dc.

I'd second Columbia, it's a great little town between DC and Baltimore and shouldn't take more than 25-30 minutes to commute to either. Probably cheaper than living in DC outright.

brah, no need for this. (What does that even mean)

applying to programs requires more than hopes of matching. it's important to weigh all factors (program strengths, location, med school tuition, scope, etc). for those of us who are married this requires additional considerations BEFORE the notion of matching. i'm just looking for helpful advice and you're being rather condescending and fixated on "match first ask questions later"......

The drive between DC and Baltimore sucks on a good day, and is hell on a bad day. You will not want to be dealing that nonsense while you are trying to get into town on time to start night float. Your fellow residents won't appreciate if you are late, even if it was unavoidable because of traffic.

If you don't want to live in Bmore take a look at Columbia, Ellicott City, Laurel, etc.

Just FYI most of the residents at Maryland live walking distance to the hospital, but there has been one that I know of that lived 10mi or so from the hospital.

1) Apply to OMS programs
2) Get invited to interviews
3) Should one of those interviews be from Maryland, then ask these questions. If not, this thread has become irrelevant (if it isn't already)
4) Rank your programs
5) Open the "Congrats" email on Match day, scroll down to see the program. If it says "Maryland" then realistically consider this scenario.

I have never heard of an OMS resident who commutes from 45 minutes away, especially between 2 metropolises like Baltimore and DC. They either live next to the hospital or in it.
