Hey everyone! Does anyone out there commute to Columbia from new jersey? I live in the wayne area. Any info would be fantastic!
Hey- I don't commute but I have a friend in Wayne who commutes to the city. NJ Transit then hop on the 1, B or C. I think it is about 1 hr-1.5hr

Thanks! Good to know its do- able

hello no. why would you wanna commute that far? because there would be so much school activities DAILY that would require you to go to school everyday for studying/tests/projects/hanging out with classmates after school/etc., could you handle driving more than 30 minutes daily? dont you also have to get past border patrol? i wouldnt find a place more than 15 minutes from the school....anyway, hope you find a place in NYC...commuting from NJ is too much..haha......dont want you to be tired from all that driving. commuting should be the least of your worries when you're in a challenging fast paced program like Columbia's MOT program.

I've commuted much farther than 30 minutes for work, and it was totally doable. That said, it would still be a huge pain for school. You're going to have to go in and stay ALL DAY and likely into the evening, because you won't just be able to pop back whenever you need something. It will also totally change your experience. If I get into the (one!) program to which I applied this year, I will commute roughly 30 minutes by car, and that is plenty for me. This is because I am married and can't just move for school. But I know it is going to be a VERY different experience than in my last masters program when most of the time I lived right on the outskirts of campus, and never more than a mile from school. Social life alone will be totally different and I don't expect to bond with my fellow students the way I did in my last program. I guess it doesn't matter to me THAT much because I already have that experience under my belt. Still, I don't want to be that one annoying student who can never meet for group work at night or on weekends because it's too inconvenient.

I live in northern nj so if I do attend Columbia I would drive over the
Gwb which takes me about 25 to 30 minutes to get to. I do see what you are saying though about not being able to pop home real quick to grab something and not living near campus like my classmates probably will. I guess I just have to weigh the pros and cons...if I can save a ton of money being inconvenienced for 2 years..I think I can suck it up. 🙂 thanks for the advice!!!

Honestly I don't think it is that bad to commute. If you do by bus then you can study on the way. If you decide to live near the school I recommend Astoria, Queens (near Astoria Bvd). By bus it is roughly 35 minutes because the M60 goes right across the river and the rent is much much cheaper than the city +- $700 for decent size room.
