I was wondering what type of housing situation the parents at COMP had. I have a son that will be going into the 6th grade, and I'm concerned about where I'll live. Are there any areas people recommend or know to avoid, in terms of having a child? Do you parents rent homes or apartments? I'll be moving from Minnesota so I'm having to do most my searches on the internet, for housing. If you have any other recommendations I would greatly appreciate the help. Thanks!

🙂

I'm not a parent, but i'm familar with the area.
Walnut District has one of the best school districts around. Probably looking in areas like the city of diamond bar or walnut. hope that helps.

As for housing, I currently rent in diamond bar. Housing prices in general will be higher then in MN.

hope this helps.

My son will be starting Kindergarten next year, and we'll be moving to Minnesota, so I've been researching schools there and not so much here in SoCal. You might want to check out Claremont, from what I understand the school district there is quite good. Also, La Verne, where I live, has a good school district (not sure about elementary school though).

Where in Minnesota are you coming from?

PM me if you have any questions.

😱 Understatement of the year! My brand-new 2800 sq. foot home on 1/3 acre of land in Minnesota cost in the $240k range... I dare you to find anything similiar for less than 4-5 times as much in this area! My mortage will be as much as I'm paying in rent currently (for a 900 sq. foot apt).

Not to discourage anyone from moving here to go to school... it's been well worth it and I'd do it again... I'm just looking forward to moving on to a more normal real estate market.

I am not a parent either, but am a first year student at COMP. It seems that the further you get away from Pomona, the better. I would look in Claremont. The Claremont Colleges are there and I would suspect that may make the public schools in the area better as well. Another suggestion would be to call one of the Claremont Colleges and ask what grade school(s) they recommend. I think Chino Hills might be o.k. too, but I would look into it first. My husband and I rent a condo in Chino - I wouldn't live here if I had kids (I would try to live in Claremont or Chino Hills, which are more expensive but worth it if you have a child). Good luck!

I grew up in Chino Hills and can tell you the Chino Valley School District (which includes the Chino and Chino Hills schools) is NOT a great school district. I think we're something like the poorest district in the area (I know, it's surprising when you see that Chino Hills is such a nice and upper-middle class area but it's true). Even our Valedictorians/Salutatorians only got into UCLA and Berkeley, we have maybe one person a year getting into Stanford and very very very rarely an Ivy League school. As far as other districts - I know Diamond Bar and Walnut have really good schools, but I don't know much about Claremont. Ontario is pretty bad also, Chino is terrible.

Basically, just don't make the mistake of sending your kids to school in Chino Hills. Lots of people just assume that since it's a nice area, newish, upper middle class/upper class and we have lots of Asians/Whites here that the schools are also good - they aren't. (I know I sound sort of bitter, but my parents stayed here because people said the schools were great, but that wasn't the case).

Home prices are insane anywhere you go in Southern California so you can't really base it on that (because everyone loves it so much here they don't want to leave!).
Anyways, best of luck to you, I'm sure everything will work out!

Chino Hills has most of the highest scoring elementary schools in San Bernardino County. They are way higher than the Chino Valley USD average and state average. Not too sure about Ayala or Chino Hills high schools as far as testing or academics, but they are obviously not putting their effort into their football teams.
Home prices are ridiculous, rent is too high. You should try to get accepted in Iowa or someplace cheaper.

Thanks for the info everyone. I've already investigated the housing market, when I was looking to buy in Cali, and realized it was obsurd. I bought my current house for $132K here in Rochester, MN, and to buy the same house in Southern Cali would be about $350K. Yikes! 😱 Anyway, we've decided to just rent, but I'd like to rent a house in a more established area so my son can feel more "at home."

I think I'm mostly going to look in the Rancho Cucamonga area . . . does anyone have a resource they use to look for homes for rent? I've checked on the internet, but the only sites that look decent charge you to use their website. Is this the norm, or is there some other way I can find houses for rent?

Again, thanks a million everyone. 🙂

I live in Rochester. I've only been here about 2 years, so I'm not sure how much help I can be. I can tell you about Rochester itself (if that's where you're headed), but I'm not too familiar with other cities/towns in Minnesota.

Let me know if I can be of any assistance though. I know the how hard moving to an unfamiliar area can be (obviously), so I'd be glad to do what I can. 😉
