I'm in comparative vertebrate anatomy and I am really struggling with this class... Those of you who have taken a class (or something similar), did you find any sources outside your text (preferably online) that helped with your understand of the material?

Our professor says she only tests us on what she talks about in class, but a lot of time she skips around and probably only writes down 50% of what she says... so I'm sort of nervous about the first test.... any help would be appreciated.

I don't know about the lab portion, but according to my friends who have taken the class, going to open lab as often as possible and studying other group's dissections really help. It's not a hard class, just an annoying and very time-consuming one. That probably didn't help at all, lol.

Have you tried asking friends/people who have taken the class already with that professor?

Yeah, thats what our professor has said. I really wish I knew someone who took the class... unfortunately, since its a senior/graduate level class its hard to find people from previous years who have taken it.

I'm a self directed learner, and the way she gives notes is giving me a fit.... I think I've spent ~3 hours alone today studying for this class and I don't have a test until the 16th!

I have this horrible fear that I'm going to fail and lose my acceptance to med school...

I teach a lab section of CVA (TAs are completely responsible for our lab- the prof doesn't have much to do with it). It's really hard to give you tips on the lecture section because it varies so much between teachers. My teacher also tested off what she said, so I wrote notes in class and typed them out afterwards, in effect making one big review for the test that I added to everyday. It usually ended up being 20-30 pgs long. If you are also having trouble with the lab I could prob give you better tips about that. How well you do really correlates with repetition and amount of time spent in open lab. If you have more specific questions feel free to ask.

Yeah, that'd actually be very helpful. Usually I take her notes and then try to correlate them with the text... which is kind of hard because sometimes the book may present information differently, or actually insert newer findings in vertebrate research.

We're using the Hildebrant (i think thats how you spell it)... I really hate this book because its so poorly put together (it talks about a topic and then an anatomical example may appear like 5 pages later... this gets very frustrating).

If you're willing to answer questions I'll definitely PM you when I have them. Like I said, I go through the book first to see if I can teach it to myself (I think I retain information better this way), but sometimes its just a little confusing for me.

I guess the biggest challenge is going to be dividing up my time, she made the lecture exam on the 16th, and the lab practical on the 18th...

Well... Tomorrow is the moment of truth... It doesn't help that she says the majority of people do poorly on her first test...

I can only try my best though... thanks again for everyone's input!
