Any thoughts on UT-Houston, Wayne State (Kresge), Vanderbilt?

I'm not familiar with any of them in particular...but have heard very good things about some of them

I'd love to hear any and all thoughts on the programs

I don't know a lot about all 3. Even if I know about 1 or 2, that leaves the 3rd one a puzzle.

My guess would be Vanderbilt>Kresge>UT Houston. At Vanderbilt (but not ophthalmology), a professor got a married resident pregnant and so her husband shot her. At UT Houston, ------ grabbed a woman's breast. Not joking.😱

I don't know anything about Vanderbilt so I can't comment on that but know a bit about UT-Houston vs. Kresge. A lot of it depends on what you are looking for. UT-Houston has beautiful new facilities and a very laid back atmosphere, there is some research but not a whole lot. It seems like a great place to train if you are interested in becoming a community Ophthalmologist or don't mind doing a fellowship not at a huge "name". As for Kresge the facilities are a little older and the program is more academic. Dr. Abrams the chairman is a big name in retina and Kresge has a very good retina fellowship. My feeling is that to get a "name fellowship" may be a little easier out of Kresge (One of the residents who just graduated from Kresge matched as Wills for glaucoma). As for numbers I would say that UT-Houston is probably a bit higher for cataracts but Kresge is a bit higher for sub-specialty cases, really comes down to what sort of program you're looking for.
