Hi future dentists, has anyone done a comparison of ASDOH and Midwestern? Besides the fact that one is a bit more established than the other, what else? Pros and cons? ...Help!

ASDOH is cheaper and is in the east valley which is relatively closer to Tempe and Scottsdale. Midwestern is probably gonna have the nicer facilities and will have much more of a "campus" feel due to the other professional programs around it. But the biggest difference is probably the emphasis on public health at ASDOH. Both deans are awesome and both have great faculty.

The curricilum is different at the two schools. ASDOH is modular while MWU is a system based/integrated approach. MWU has a larger student population on campus due to the handful of health professions programs. MWU also has full-time science faculty where ASDOH hires science faculty to fly in to teach their respective modules for segments lasting a week or so. ASDOH's dental class sizes are about half of what MWU's are. MWU gets the D1's in the sim lab every week for waxing and clinical projects where ASDOH D1s don't as much. MWU is probably a little closer to downtown Phoenix and Scottsdale, ASDOH is probably closer to Tempe. ASDOH is in a more suburban environment while MWU is in a little bit more of an industrial part of town. Both campuses are beautiful. You won't get in trouble for walking on the grass at MWU :soexcited:. Both schools take boards part I after 1st year. I think both schools try to create diverse classes so the students come from all different walks of life. I think the biggest difference is the emphasis on public health at ASDOH. You are required to get a certificate of public health at ASDOH with the option to get a masters.

If you get into both schools, you can't make a wrong choice either way in my opinion.

How many hours a week do you spend in the sim lab?

How many hours a week do you spend in the sim lab?

We are in the sim lab every Monday for about 6 hours (10am-5pm with a 1 hr lunch). We will additionaly go in on days other than Monday if we have a waxing practical or something. Many students wander in there during lunch or after school throughout the week to work on projects or get more practice. We have ID cards that open up the sim clinic doors so we can work there whenever we want provided it is within "open hours" 7am-9pm-ish.

We sealed extracted teeth our second week, learned how to apply fluoride varnish on eachother, waxed several teeth, practiced tooth preparations with the high speeds, took impressions, used a face bow to mount our casts on articulators, studied occlusion with our articulated casts, prepped our casts on the articulators (18-21), and built them up with wax into propper class I occlusion, carved teeth out of wax, and did some cool TMJ stuff.

We were up there right away, I think ASDOH students jump into the sim lab and work starting in the winter/spring. I gathered this info from a buddy of mine who is a first year over there. It seems like at ASDOH they focus mainly on the sciences at the first half of the first year, then jump into the sim lab where we kind of start with both at MWU.

Hmmm, well I think at ASDOH we go into the sim lab on Wednesdays after a few hours of science classes. I'm not sure when it starts though. I think the reason you do get extra time if any is because you're the only dental class there right now. I'm sure when you're D2's the D1's will have less flexibility when going to the sim lab outside of class.

Well, next year the D1s will still be in the sim lab from 10am-5pm on Mondays, so they will still have that time set aside just as we do this year, but next year the D2s will be up there 4 days a week (tues-Fri)so yes, there will be more activity in there. I'm not sure how it will work outside of class hours, but but next year the D1's will not have any less time than we do this year.
