I wanted to get your feedback about these programs:
1. UCSF
2. MGH
3. Univ. Maryland
4. Miami

in terms of quality of training, how would you rank these programs.

First, be sure to visit the new dental residency forum.

Next, I'd rank those programs like this:
1.
2.
3.
4.
5.
6.
7. Univ Maryland
8. Miami
9-87.
88. MGH
89. UCSF

I've heard, from friends of mine who went into OMFS, that they're all pretty good, none of them are spectacular (for spectacular programs, see LSU or Parkland). The MGH has a reputation for being incredibly malignant (to quote my friend who externed at MGH: "Kaban is the meanest mother****er on the planet"), as does Maryland.

Both SF and Maryland have cancer fellowships, so the residents may not get to do a lot of operating on these cases, as the fellow will have priority.

Miami does tons of trauma and tons of pathology (i.e. cancer) because the chairman, Marx, is basically a pathologist. Little to no orhtognathics, implants , and tmj. The only positive thing about the program is that it's in Miami...lots of ladies.

I have heard alot about MGH and how malignant that program is. I have also heard that residents don't cut much. Dr. Pogrel is at UCSF and I don't know if that really has direct impact on residents training. The program "seems to be" well rounded, but still I am not sure if the residents get to cut or not. I tried to do a search on SDN but not much is mentioned about ucsf.

I just think it is funny that you say MGH is so malignant. Since they don't operate much, what do they get yelled at........not reading the journal article well enough?

UCSF is a very good program. They are probably one of the best programs in the country (in my opinion), HOWEVER, unless you are from Columbia, Harvard or UConn dental school, it is a 7 year program. Even if you are from UCSF dental, it is a 7 year program, for those three it is a standard 6 year program. This is due to the fact that at those three dental schools the dental and med students are physically in the same classroom, not just sharing faculty. The extra year, in my opinion, is better spent doing a fellowship, not in an extra year of med school.

MGH is alright. They do a lot, but are malignant. There is a reason people repeat this statement about that program.

Maryland isn't that different from MGH. They do a ton too, but the environment sucks.

Miami does a lot of path and trauma and is busy as hell which isn't necessarily a bad thing. It is the only 4 year on your list. That's all I know about it.

how about input on Detroit Recieving, Henry Ford, Drexel, Allegany, UIC, Cincinatti, LIJ, NYU, MCG? I know ppl keep telling me that UTSW, LSU-Sh, and LSU-NO are the best but that means they are going to be the most competitive so I would appreciate any constructive input on these programs. Thanks all.

I would also appreciate any input residents could give on Detroit Recieving, Henry Ford, and St. John Detroit Riverview... TIA

UCSF now turned into 6-year program .. no more 7 year program.

I heard Parkland is a rough place. Everybody gets divorced and Dr. Ellis is leaving.

In my honest opinion, I think LSU-NO is the best out of the ones you mentioned....go figure.... 😀

Nawlins is up there, but the post-midnight OR cases freak the chimmy changas out of me.

I think Alabama has a strong program as well. I lived in Birmingham for a year and it's a really nice city, which is surprising to most yankees.
