Hey I am always interested in medicine+business, and I was curious how difficult is it to get your own turf in Aesthetic Market?
I just did a simple search on Plastic Surgeon near my house. I live in Oklahoma, where the doctor/patient ratio is the lowest in the country. And I can find several plastic surgeon within 30 min drive. Having a plastic surgery is a big investment so I wont double if someone drive alot further to find a "more well know, more established, more proven" doctor (whether that doctor is better or not is unknown).
So the entry into the field seems to be extremely difficult even where the competition is not very high.
One thing I am surprised about is that there is NEVER any commercial going on with plastic surgery in my state. It seems like the easiest way to break the "glass ceilling" (entry barrier), create demand and the more people see your face the better they think you are. Is this just because my state's market is still unsaturated and plastic surgeons dont want to start fighting right now? How about other states? Do people go on TV and brag about how they are Harvard train plastic or anything like that?
Here is what I have seen in other states.....
1. On the way to Texas (I35) I have seen this one billboard advertising plastic surgery and the sign is pointing at the plastic surgery building......literally look like a freaking shed. Everytime I go by I am thinking are you serious? Is it that bad? (I mean you hear about all the sham surgeon doing stuff in their own place and alot of shaddy stuff going on)
2. On the air plane the travel guide include the "Top" plastic surgeons in several states. I wonder how well this works??? I dont think anyone will decide on the plane that they want to do some plastic during the trip
Btw are most aesthetic performed as out patient? If they do most of plastic surgeon have their own op room in their building or share a ASC? Isnt their legal momentum that is trying to prevent plastic from performing in their own building?
Also anyone heard of dermatology/plastic partners? It sound pretty good on paper in term of gaining competitive advantage.
Do you guys have any experience in starting a private practice (dont worry about me stealing you market I am not even in med school yet 😀 )? I read the sticky on top and am fascinated by it.
