Hey everyone!

I understand this is an iffy and taboo topic.

I posted a similar question in a higher up forum and got ridiculed hard core.

Please if you do not mind, answer one or more of these Questions:

1. Yearly Salary
2. How much do you save
3. Investments?
4. Can you lay out your schooling and post MD education
5. Is the student debt worth the pay
6. Why did you choose to go into [insert specialty]
7. Anything else

Thanks a lot.. and please only legitimate answers!!

I've done a lot of online "research" on the subject, but much of the numbers range quite a bit.
for example: I've seen ortho numbers around 350k and other sites claiming 500k and beyond.
Understandably location matters, but does it matter the equivalence of 200k+?

Yes, as does practice environment, practice type, procedures performed, etc.

A junior academic orthopedic surgeon in the middle of SF who primarily does hand surgeries is likely to be making a lot less than a senior partner in a spine practice in Alabama.

Average is something like $210k, but there are quite a few people earning below average. So assume something around low $200k. But you don't get that now-- you get it after 4 years of med school and 2-7 years of residency and maybe another 1-2 years of fellowship. And Your debt can be pretty high on this route. So is it "worth it" from a purely financial aspect? Probably not - there are lots of ways to earn money. But is it a reasonable income to do something you really enjoy? Sure. So if you like the job function push forward. But If it's mostly about the money you are probably going to hate so many aspects of this path and all the toiling that leads up to the paycheck, that you will end up pretty miserable.

My interests are in surgery. (this may change later on but we'll see.)
Family Practice earns approx. 187k and i know a few docs that are making a little more than that and complain about student debt. FP and Peds earn the least, and that is why there are not many of them.
I know a few surgeons that live quite lavishly, but then again some who are doing on the okish side.

Surgeons have some of the longer training paths so they defer income the longest.

That being said, their debt is larger because it acquires interest during their longer residencies, correct? So how much do you really come out on too? lol
