how are you all dealing with competive classmates? it's the end of the semester here, and people have been really nice up until now, but I think that stress is trying to make some people really ugly and it's not enjoyable...Any ideas for combating this from those of you who've been there? Also, does anyone know of any good immunology tutorial sites?

thanks,
natalie

I skip a lot of class, study on my own, and ignore the gunners. Works like a charm.

P.S. Try not to stand outside the testing room before the exam. There's nothing worse than listening to people pimp each other and listening to people freak out right before the exam.

I know what you mean! I usually sit in my car right up until the time they open the doors to let us into the room.

It's funny though, the podiatry students seem to be a tad more competitive towards us than we are to each other. It's not difficult to pick out the nasty-type gunners, who eventually end up with nobody to work on OMM with. Fortunately, there aren't too many of those destructive types around here. Just don't mind them.

yes those gunners can be rough, but I do agree with the other about not listening to them pimp each other before a test, that is one way to freak you out.

Gunners will be gunners, just remember why you are there, what goals you want to accomplish, etc. If you are happy with your performance and meet your goals, then screw the gunners. That simple. One of the biggest problem with medical school is that everybody is pretty intelligent, I mean even the quote unquote dumbest person in your class is smarter than the average joe, so egos will collide in that environment.

There is no way to put gunners in their place, some are very rude, I had one person in my class I couldn't stand to even listen to her speak, she was the class expert on everything and ironically had a minor in everything that we were taking at the time, neuro, psych, etc. Whatever! Who cares!

If you get what you want in the end, the residency you want, the specialty to want, and acheive your goals, then gunners don't matter.

I'm not sure if this is what you're looking for--for finals you probably need a little more depth but

if you go to the Kaplan website, and look under usmle step 1 webprep and then click on "demo", they have all their immunology lectures online for free. They are a good basic discussion of the topic.

Hope this helps.
Here's the link:

http://www.kaptest.com/repository/t.../Supplemental_Resources/ME_step1_webprep.html

and select "view demo"
fill out the info and it's there!!

thank you! this site is great, i love the Prof's accent...don't hear that very much up here in maine 🙂

This is how I deal with the competative class mate thing, I really hate it too. I share anything and everything I have with whoever wants it. If I know how to explain something someone doesn't understand, I do it. I don't follow thier silly lead, I don't care about honoring. I just do the best I can. Don't get hung up on it oceandoc, I think we go to the same school. I know what you are talking about.
I am sure glad the block is over now. I am just having trouble getting motivated for GI and nephrology, and yes more immunology!

Yeah, I do the same thing. I emailed that link to my entire 1st year class. We don't usually have issues with people being competitive but there was a little issue and some rumors flying around that actually turned out not to be true, so who knows...of course there are still gunners here, but they're mostly not too bad.

I don't think we are at the same school because we aren't taking GI or nephrology right now (unless you mean in histo...and thankfully that's over...or you're a 2nd year...hmmm)

Anyway, thanks for the help... 🙂 ....it's back to biochem cramming for me.

How competitive can they be, you guys do go to DO school.🙄 It's not like you guys go to highly ranked allopathic school, now thats some competition.

Fortunately for us...good grief.

 Guess what? We are also easy to get along with doctors too! Perhaps you should check your basal sphincter tone. I would imagine it is at least 2 SD's above the average DO students'.

See you on the wards.

I'm a 2nd year oceandoc.
DO school, is not easier than MD school once your in. Some may present the argument that it is a little easier to get accepted to A DO school ( I won't agree or disagree), but once you start, the curriculum is designed to be equally as challenging and difficult as an MD curriculum. And it is, end of story.

He has a point there.

Here's one way you can rid yourself of a gunner(s) who has/have wandered next to you. Wait till they start pimping another gunner (which should only take 2 minutes or less). One will open up with a question from the most obscure location in the middle of 50 pages of notes. Just before 5 other gunners standing around fall over themselves to answer the question first, quickly interject an answer you know is wrong. All 6 will tell you that it is indeed incorrect, then they will proceed to give you the right answer.

At this point, cut them off and tell them that your answer is actually the correct one and that they are all wrong, no question about it. If you're lucky, all 6 will go running off to get their books to prove you wrong as soon as possible. At that point, quietly slip away unnoticed.

Hey Oceandoc-
Yea, this week has been rough!! I guess the combination of stress/exams/FOD takehome has brought out the absolute worst in everyone!

Just take it in stride and remember why you are there-for YOUR medical education. Let the gunners burn themselves out. Slow and steady wins the race.

It does suck that some people feel the need to excel at the sake of others, but that just proves that the scum floats to the top.

Whew-I guess I just needed to let out some frustration. Now off to Immuno....and Biochem...

Good luck!!

Nicole
