Hello,
How competitive is getting into Vet school? My GPA is 3.40 and my science gpa is about 3.20. Is it possible to get in with my GPA or I'm doomed. I haven't taken the GRE yet.

With no experience, there is no chance you are getting in. If you look at the successful applicant thread you will see that your GPA's wont preclude you. But GRE and experience at many schools are weighted equally with GPA's.
If you get good quality experience, some fabulous letters of recommendation (one has to be from a vet!), fill out your apps well (I recommend keeping a log of all of your experiences, it helps a lot), and interview well, your GPA will not be as detrimental. A lot of people who have a lower GPA in undergrad have to get some grad school courses under their belt before they make it in, but it is definitely possible.
Vet school is very very competitive for many reasons, not the least of which is that there are only 28 vet schools and just as many people trying to get in.

From all of the success stories on SDN, I don't think it's impossible to get in with a GPA that's a little lower. In order to make up for it, though, I would recommend getting some really outstanding experience or maybe even pursuing a master's degree first. Try to set yourself apart from the applicant pool however you can.

I have a 3.3 overall, around a 3.2 science, and I got two interviews. Neither of the schools I interviewed at have sent out letters regarding who has been accepted, so I can't say I'm a "successful applicant", yet.
My point is this: Everyone told me it was hopeless, that I would never be considered. All you can do is try your best in your classes, get as much experience as you can, and study for the GRE. Don't feel like if you don't have at least a 3.5, or over 1000 hours of experience, or at least a 1300 on your GRE that you don't stand a chance. Yes, the lower your stats the harder it is to be successful, but you never know. Hang in there 🙂

Depending on ypur grades, retaking some classes might not be a bad idea. If you aced gen chem and bio then got C's in all you upper level sciences that would look worse than the other way arund.

Look at incoming class stats. There are people who get in with a GPA of 2.22. Be a well-rounded person with high drive and experience and you should do well with those grades.

After my experience just today, I'd encourage you to also read carefully the application/evaluation procedures of the schools you might be interested in. For example, the U of MN says in the information they mailed me today that the GRE and GPA scores are used to determine (in part) if they offer you an interview, but "scores from the non-academic section and the interview will determine admission to the program." So request information and read! Different schools emphasize different aspects of your application. If you rock the GRE and maybe can boost your GPA a bit, I think you can get in better range. But yes, experience seems to be the great equalizer in this game, from everything I've read and heard.
My stats aren't too much higher than yours (3.46 overall and i think my science was like a 3.17?) I rocked the experience and did decently well on my GREs. So... all in all its possible you just have to remember to boost up the rest of your application. I also applied to A LOT of schools to make sure that I would have a chance of getting in.

Yes, it's possible to get in with your GPA. It also depends upon where you're applying, but, I think many of the schools - if you check their admittance stats - will show acceptances with GPA's lower than 3.4. Their average may indeed be higher, but, yes, a 3.4 is possible.
Prepare for the GRE and don't take it until you're feeling at least fairly confident. Once you take the exam, and accept the score at that time, that score is on your record. Even if you perform better on a re-take, the previous scores are still on record. Each school varies on which score(s) they'll consider, but, when you take the exam, you want to make it count as best you can.
A really sweet GRE score can do alot for a below-average GPA in many cases, apparently. So do your best on it, and be sure to practice the exam prior.
