On my interviews, hand-picked students talk about .." oh we are pass/fail....we aren't competitive here, we help each other all the time, and we play and eat candy all day long😍 "
I was wondering how much of this is true.

Is it possible that the same ruthless, back-stabbing, COMPETITIVE
Pre-meds can change into these smiling med. students. Or is it all just a bunch of BS. Personally I think, for a lot of pre-meds, it is just in their nature to be competitive...the most competitive ones make it to med. school.

Is this "non-competitive" stuff just a smoke-screen?

its no smoke screen at all. A lot of premed arent gunners. Its just a generalization a lot of people like to use unfortunately. Most of us are pretty chill I would like to hope.

The kids at MSU, UVM, and Davis are so chill its not even funny. They all help each other pass, share notes with each other...study groups and everything. Since class sizes are relatively small you get to know your class pretty close and its never fun to see a couple people not do well and fail. Nobody really wants to see that.

I dont think its a smoke screen at all.

yep - i can honestly say i haven't encountered the kind of hard core competitive students you always hear about in med school.

I'll concede that a few are kind of anal about their grades, but it is not a curve system, and most of them don't know about class rank yet. Many of them still lack perspective on things like grades. However, they are a fun and everyone is confident of passing (our class averages for exams is ~85%).

The fact is, most of these "gunner" students are immature newbies who have yet to learn anything about life, friends, or values. Their conceptions of success have not progressed beyond adolescence, when self-actualization was measured by the number of legos/carebears you owned. And I think it shows in their applications. I met a gunner friend a few months ago...I remember when she flatly refused to share her old exam collection with me in undergrad. Anyway, she still hasn't got into med school. ^^
