I was wondering if anyone could give me some sense of how competitive I am for admission. I recently finished a Bio degree with an overall GPA of 3.42 along with a similiar science GPA. I am taking the GRE's soon and expecting to get around 500 verbal and 750 quant. I have worked at a small animal clinic for 1.5 year (15hr/wk), but dont have any research experience...

Also, my advisor has been adiment about me submitting the VMCAS application early, is he wrong?

Advisors tell you to submit early because VMCAS usually gets a lot of submissions right at the end, which can cause them to get clogged. At least, this is what I've been told.

As for competitiveness, its always dependent on who else is applying, etc. I had a GPA similar to yours, and slightly higher GREs and I got in. I also had less experience, but I did have research. It always depends. Good luck!

and depends on the school. where are you planning to apply?

In regards to the applying early thing. I finished my app about 2 weeks before the deadline, but didn't submit it until a few days before the deadline (I read over it A LOT; talk about being anal). When I finally did submit it the website was pretty slow and the server failed and said my account did not exist. I freaked out since I spent months working on the app. I tried signing in again like 30 minutes later and it worked this time. Thankfully my app wasn't lost. So you may want to take the advice of applying early, but I don't think you need to go to an extreme. Submitting it 2 weeks early would prob. be sufficient.

As for the competitiveness. I had a 3.54 after my fall grades were submitted, a 560 verbal, and a 740 quant. I had lots of lab animal experience and done research and got in to 2 out of the 3 schools I applied to. As dyachei posted though it really depends on who you are up against. Good luck.

The VMCAS system will tell you over and over again to try and submit at least a week early due to the slowness of the server near Oct 1st. Besides that there is no benefit to applying early (except for MSU which does rolling admissions - and the only benefit there is knowing about your acceptance earlier). Many pre-vet advisors are also pre-med advisors and for med school applying early is a must, so that is probably why your advisor said that.
