Hi, fellow peds people!

I'm having a bit of a freak-out. I'm applying this year wanting to match at my home institution because I love the program and my husband is committed to grad school and can't move with me. I've just done three elective months in peds and rocked them all, built up a great reputation with the faculty and residents, so while nothing is a guarantee, I stand the best chance of staying here rather than going elsewhere.

Then...I took a day or two to respond to my interview invite because I wanted to check my schedule, and come to find that all the dates are already full (!!!), so I'm on the waitlist now. I hope that something will open up, but I'm prepared for the worst case scenario, so I need to focus on the other interviews I do have so far (MCG, East Carolina, UT Chattanooga, and UAB). I'm still waiting on UT-Memphis, Vandy, Mercer, Duke, Rainbow Babies, MUSC, Palmetto, UNC, and Carolinas. Out of my interviews, UAB seems most similar to what I like about my home program, but I know it's an upper tier school and I'm wondering if I stand a shot at matching there given that it retains a lot of its own students. With this kind of profile:

Step 1: 224
Step 2 CK: 229
Honors/HP in all clinicals except Surgery (choked on the shelf)
Strong LORs from peds faculty and my thesis advisor, including the medical director of our peds heme/onc unit
Getting a dual degree MPH
Lots of community service and non-profit leadership experience, occasional international medical work

Of course I'm going to be setting my sights anywhere I can to be realistic, but would I be completely insane to hope to match at UAB in case my home program's waitlist doesn't open up? Any insight that folks have would be great (including input on the other programs if you have it)! Thanks!

Don't worry yet. I think that a spot will likely open up. At the beginning of the interview season, everyone feverishly schedules tons of interviews and then realize that they can't afford or possibly go on all of scheduled interviews plus people start to get burnt out after 5+ interviews. Also, once people get the interviews they want, they will drop others. Good luck and don't freak out yet!

When you were trying to schedule at your home program, did they know you were from their school? I find it really odd that they wouldn't open up a spot for you. A lot of programs don't even have their own students interview on the regular interview days.

I guess I didn't have enough faith in my school - just heard back from my program director who assured me that they'd fit me in and that I'd hear from them soon. 🙂 Thanks for the advice!!
