So I am graduating from my undergrad institution this April. Therefore this is the last semester for me to complete the requirement for my chemistry minor. All I need to take is Analytical Chem and the Lab. I am leaning towards not doing it because it will cost more money and needless to say lots of time. I am already carrying 12 credits. Is there any advantage to completing the chem minor? What about the fact that I might have listed it on some of my secondaries? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

You probably should finish it if you listed it on your secondaries. I wanted stop one of my minors as well, but I had already listed it on the AMCAS. Needless to say I will be finishing it

You can contact the schools individually and ask them if it is okay. Typically, dropping a minor shouldn't be as much of a hassle as dropping a major (IMO), but if I were you, I'd take it and finish the minor just to be safe.

And I don't think you can post multiple threads with the same question.

I think you should finish it since you listed that on your AMCAS app. I was also a chemistry minor until my senior year, when I decided to audit biochemistry 'cos I was really stressed out. So, although I took all the required courses (including analytical chem.), I didn't list the chemistry minor on my AMCAS 'cos I obviously needed to have credit for biochem. Besides, analytical chemistry is not that hard. It's so much easier than Orgo, believe me. Good luck.

why audit?

There is no advantage that I'm aware of. As for courses listed on secondaries, all you could list there would be anticipated courses. I doubt that whether or not you decide to complete a minor would sway your outcome. However, if your grades took a bad hit because of the difficulty (It IS known as a GPA killer), that could make a difference. Though, unless it was a super bad hit because other grades also suffered, not even that would be likely.

every idiot premed kid is a chem minor

I did a double major (chem and bio). My advice is DO NOT do it!!! It will definitely not help you stand out, and ad comms will not even notice it, guaranteed! You want to have as high GPA as you can. I would focus on acing your 12 credits, and doing something fun in your spare time

Yeah I agree that they won't notice it, its assumed that you took a lot of chem just for your pre-med requirements.

But why would taking the class cost more? Since you're taking 12 credits, aren't you considered a full-time student and paying the semester tuition rate, rather than the per-credit tuition rate?

I remember I wanted to get my chemistry minor but because the way class schedules were set up I ended up with one of the hardest possible undergrad chemistry classes at my school. Physical Chemistry for Biochemists with the pre-reqs of Calc III and a full year of physics (An unholy triumvirate). Well bad luck for me, they listed the class as needing only Calc I, so I signed up. Since I wanted the minor pretty badly I just stuck with the class. I had to teach myself up to Calc III as well as spend time learning the chemistry. Need less to say I ended up doing 4-5 hours of studying and homework a day to pass the class. Even better than that was that no TA signed on to do the course because no one wanted to deal with it. And my teacher decided that he would only have office hours once a week for one hour which made it impossible to get any real help. To end on a good note though I ended up with a 3.7. The lesson however is that I would never ever do that again, a minor simply wasn't worth all the time and effort I put in.

Call me weird but I liked analytical chemistry; it was fun. I'd go for it just for the heck of it but that's just me.

I hated analytical like no other!! Much worse than OC! I made my 1st C. :barf:

In your case, keep in mind analytical will take a lot of your time. It requires more than just memorization. There are a lot of assignments/ practice problems, kind of like OC. As for your app saying you did it already, that might be a problem.
