Hi Everyone!

First of all, congratulations to all of you who have found out about Med School acceptances! and for those of you waiting still, I'm sure that all of you will get into amazingly wonderful schools and turn into amazing and wonderful physicians!!!!

Anyway, I'm a freshman in my first semester at Penn State (University Park, Honors College, just to really clarify myself). I've gotten AP Credit for Intro to Bio and the Intro Chem courses (I'll be taking the advanced versions next year) but I had questions about a particular course I should take next semester.

I'm majoring in Biochemistry, so I'll be taking mostly degree requirements. I thought it would be really awesome to take one of the 400 level Biology courses, just because...it's my favorite subject in the whole world. I was originally going to take Developmental Neurobiology, but I noticed that Histology is also offered. If I take Histo, my day would start at 8 AM (Tues/Thurs) and end at 10 PM (Tues/Thurs). I'm just a little scared of taking Neuro so early (I'll also be taking OChem II), so I don't know what to do

What do you all suggest? I'm not doing this because I'll look wonderful for med school, I'm really really really really interested in the subjects and I don't know which to take! I'll end up taking both at some point in my next four years though...

Thanks so much! so sorry for writing such a novel!

First off, are you sure that you want to take a 400 level biology your second semester in college? Obviously, you know yourself better then any of us know you, but I would ease into those upper level classes (which you may be doing this semester). AP classes (especially science) tend to be (or at least at my high school) much easier then their university counterpart. Now if you still want to take one of them next semester, I would go with the Neurobiology, because 8am-10pm is a long *ss day.

Also I thought that med schools frowned on using AP credits for pre med requirements😕

Gan11, go see your advisor. My tax dollars are paying for them to help you out 😉. In all seriousness, go see an advisor. He or she will help you more than we can. Also, more than likely there are pre-reqs you'll have to take before you can take a 400-level course.

if he is going to major in bio/chem it won't matter since he'll be taking other bio/chem classes.

ps: you're only a freshman... don't take highest level bio classes til you've got some basic bio foundations at a college level. Taking a class bio class at a place like PSU is gonna be different than taking it in HS.
