Does anybody listen to NPR? I'm wondering where Tavis Smiley went. He hasn't been on his show for a while and the guy who is replacing him isn't saying he's sitting in for Tavis. But I miss him! He's much better than the replacement guy.

I remember reading somewhere that Smiley left NPR for good because he didn't feel that NPR had the same objectives as he did. Hopefully the replacement guy isn't too bad...or else it'll be something to get used to.

Tavis left NPR. There was a dispute over renegotiation of his contract. He felt as if he wasn't being promoted enough.

I've only heard the new guy few times. I think Tavis is over-rated as a journalist.

you can see tavis on kqed still; i dont like him all that much; charlie rose is the man of kqed, tho he does interject his thoughts and opinions too much

Isn't KQED the Bay area affiliate of PBS? Some not from the bay wouldn't know that, hahaha.

Tavis is much better than Charlie. Even though I find charlie's show interesting at times, he can be too much of a butt-kisser, which is fine for talking about books and film etc but when you're tackling tough issues you can't be afraid to ask tough questions. tavis show had more guts and it wasn't the same old you get with all your mainstream old white conservative types.

What I liked best about Tavis is that he would interview just about anybody with any opinion, and he wouldn't interject his own. Usually the person spoke for themselves! Like one time he interviewed this white supremacist (who knows why the guy agreed to an interview) who was saying the most absurd things, and Tavis was just like, uh-huh, because obviously the guy was putting his own foot in his mouth (when it came to people who listen to NPR, anyway!).

thanks 🙂 I'll check that out if I'm ever up that late 😛

NPR is awesome. I listen to 'All Things Considered' almost every day, I love when they interview cool interesting people, like Cuervo Man or Madonna or Mos Def. And their musical selections are great. I haven't paid enough attention to their dj's, but last I heard one of them went to work for a rival radio station. Maybe that was Tavis? I dunno.
Good luck with your application process, btw...
