Hi, I'm finishing up my second year of fellowship in the ABIM research track (PGY-4), single boarding medical oncology. I'm being considered for internal Assistant Professor positions where I would do one day of clinic per week and continue my current research in the same lab until I'm ready to launch an independent basic science career.
The ABIM website says that the last year of the short track may be completed in a faculty position with 80% research effort. Due to clinical need and a supportive chief, they may want me to start earlier than that. Does anyone have any experience petitioning the ABIM to see if they would allow a candidate to finish fellowship sometime in the middle of the PGY-5 year? My research effort will be maintained at the same level, and I feel that I'd be stronger clinically the earlier I get experience as an attending.
