I go to school in NY and know that the state boards require a compounding portion. I'm wondering what the emphasis is on compounding/pharmaceutics is in other schools of pharmacy. My school tends to have a strong emphasis on this topic, and frankly it bores me to death. I'm not even sure I plan to practice in New York. Is this stuff even relevant in the real world? Do other states/schools place as much stress on it? I feel like it's a waste of time and I could be learning other important things.

We had four semesters with some sort of compounding at UIC.

If you ever work in a hospital, you're gonna need to know how to make IVs.

My school only has 1 yr of pharmaceutics; class consisted of pretty much measuring **** that should be familiar from genchem, and stuff that's more scientific as opposed to practice based. Lab mainly consisted of basic bio/chem/physics stuff like drug dissolution properties, and making random crap like making a suppository, compound a cream or ointment, measure ****, and make it pharmaceutically elegant. At the time I thought it sucked and was a pointless waste of time, but in retrospect it's kinda fun since it's old school and from a time when pharmacists had to know more hard chemistry and made actual drug products.

By the time you actually graduate you will barely remember anything about it and even if you sat for the NYS wet lab you'd probably still have to take a refresher course.

It is important only if a.) you want a license immediately after graduation from a wet lab state like NY, or b.) you actually compound stuff that's more complex than mixing Benzaclin. There are more important things to learn, but you need to learn the basics first and I also assume that it's a required part of accreditation, not to mention an actual requirement for your state.
