has anyone else taken the CBSE? our school made us take it last week so that we can use it to form a board study plan. how accurate is it at predicting our USMLE score? i don't really like the score it predicted for me so i'm wondering how much i can improve on it if i study my butt off. any comments? experiences? words of encouragement?

Everyone in my class had to take it before we had done any studying and we were told that if you study hard for ~5wks you can expect about a 25-30 point increase (on average). Of course, if you get a 230 on the CBSE then don't necessarily expect 5 wks of studying to equal a 260.

ooo 25-30 point increase would be really sweet!

pretty accurate if you take it after you've been studying for a while. I personally recommend spending the first half of your study period working on all the material equally then the second half maybe spend more time on things you're less clear on. a 200 question NBME is not a large enough sample size, imho, to identify across-the-board strengths or weaknesses at the very beginning of studying.

hi all,
was wondering if the CBSE is available to the general public, or do you have to go through your school? my school doesn't offer it....so was wondering if i can take the example elsewhere?

We had to take it too. Our Dean said there is a strong correlation to the one you take in March and the real thing.

I think the one they give for the schools are not the ones that are online. However, they are of similar caliber in regards to Usmle style Q's.

Lol, if I could get a 30 point boost to what I got on my practice, that would be so friggin awesome.

The self-assessments through the NBME are available for purchase (~$45) at the following site: http://www.nbme.org/programs/sas/sas.asp. Various schools offer a voucher for the first exam you take (should you decide to take a second one, you must pay for it). You should at least check to see if they will subsidize the cost for you.

My school just took it this morning... I was glad that I wasn't clueless on all of the questions. We probably won't get our scores until mid-late next week but I was just wondering, for those who've taken Step 1 and the basic science shelf, how much did your score improve and based on your school's input, was that accurate? Thanks!

I improved 14 points, but I really wanted to improve 15. Man did I want that one more point really bad.

Hey Long. That's funny that you said that. I'll be honest. It did cross my mind when you first posted your score. Either way, you absolutely rocked Step 1 and should be extremely proud of your hardwork. Not many people do 50 BSS questions during their freakin lunch break!

14 points aint a big improvement. then again, your score was way high.
i only wish i had the work ethic to remember so much info. I don't have the time now.

Is this CBSE (paper test) offered at medical schools the same as any of the CBSSA's offered on nbme.org?

My school is offering it at the end of may but I also plan to take the CBSSA's. I don't want any of the CBSSA's to be identical to dhe CBSE!

I'm pretty sure they are all different.
