I hear compression stockings make standing 12 hours in retail more bearable.

Any thoughts?

What gauge compression would I need?

Do I need to wash these after every wear (ie, need to buy multiple pairs)?

Already have the Dansko shoes...wondering how else I can make life more bearable. Big plus is bathroom only a few feet away from pharmacy area.

You will definitely want multiple pairs, they get really sweaty and stink after one use. I only wear them once in a while, but they do seem to help.

Hey, we just talked about this in one of my classes!
So here's what I would recommend:
Start with a mild compression or 8-15 gauge stockings.
Make sure you measure before you work, ideally in the morning. Measure both legs at the smallest part of the ankle and the widest part of the calf. Also the widest part of the thigh if you want thigh-highs. Thigh-highs require glue to stay up, knee-highs don't.
Make sure the fabric is smooth and even throughout. For knee-high the top of the hose should stop about a two-finger width before the crook of the knee. If you go too high it might slip or roll down causing double compression which is bad. It should cause no pain.
They should be washed after every use. Best washed by hand with cool water and mild soap. Which usually means in the washing machine on delicate. Try to avoid harsh detergents or softeners. Hang to air dry, never put in the dryer as this prematurely wears out the elastic.
There are open toe and closed toe available, this depends on leg length and personal preference.
Good luck!

I wear compression socks and sleeves every shift I work. I get mine from my local running store. 2XU are my favorite brand. I have a couple pair but I'll wear the same pair 3-4 times between washings. I wash cold and hang dry. I notice that My legs feel fresher and there is less swelling
