Interested to see how well recieved this one is. Looks good, if only they would offer it with something other than Windows 7 starter. Upgrading on your own is a pain in the butt. But, once you upgrade, it's got the multitouch. Wonder how they'll perform in a classroom setting.

I like Asus 🙂 I've got one of their original eeePC netbooks that a lot of fun and great for traveling.

I like asus too. my bf's new lap top is asus and we love it so far. one reason why i eliminated asus from my tablet search was because the screen is too small. 10 inch? Im using a 10in laptop right now, it is my travel comp because it is so tiny but i could NEVER do school work on it. it also took me quiet some time to get used to the smaller keyboard, my fingers were going in all the wrong keys when i typed lol

Are upgrades available for this? looking at the specs it seems really basic. 2GB RAM and 4 cell battery. I guess that's why the price is so low? I dont want to burst your bubble but i found a site that did an early review on it and it said it was disappointing. but maybe they dont know what they're talking about! it will be nice to see what more customers rate it, maybe in May there will be more reviews on amazon. that price is amazing though, its cheaper than HP!

Supposedly the ram is upgradable, unlike their earlier eeePC models. But honestly, I'd ONLY be using it to take notes on if I did get one, so not too big a deal. It wouldn't be my primary by any stretch of the imagination.
Hard drive is a decent size if you get the 320gb model.
Battery supposedly gets 6.5 hrs, but I guess we'll have to see if that holds true. The Asus is "hybrid batteries" now or something like that, so I guess less cells needed for long life?

My current little eeePC has an even smaller keyboard since it's only like a 7inch keyboard, and I can type reasonably well on that, so that doesn't worry me. Takes some getting used to, but doable.

Maybe they'll come out with a second generation pretty soon, although this one's apparently been on the mrket in Europe for a while now. Most of the "review" sites I looked at were based on prototypes, not the actual realeased model. It was just put on the market in the US earlier this month.

ooo hybrid batteries!!! one thing i am worried about is how big my comp will be with the 8 cell battery!!

$999 price tag? Yowch! That's cool how it comes apart though.

I'd like to see them upgrade the Ipad and make it more suitable. Supposedly you can use a stylus with the Ipad though. Again, not enough reviews about that specifically to really tell.


My HP has a 12 cell battery. It's gigantic, but makes a great handle! LOL. Seriously though, I get a solid 4.5-5 hrs, and it's a big laptop, size wise, memory wise, processor wise and all that. I wouldn't trade the battery life for anything. If I turn off all background programs and just type in a basic program, I can push it up to 6.5hrs.

Wow, that's pretty sweet looking.

The 8 cell battery isn't too bad. When it's in tablet mode, it sticks out to the right hand side. It's actually pretty useful to hang onto if you were to write while standing up like using a clipboard. I don't even notice it when it lays down flat on a desk.
 
Tried out the tablet in class today. It was interesting. I have some questions and some thoughts (something for everyone).

Questions:
1) How do you turn off the clicker on the pen? I keep on clicking that while I am writing.

2) How do you recallibrate the pen position? It is way off when I use the computer as a tablet.

3) Doesn't the screen seem a little dim when lying down in tablet mode? Can that be adjusted (automatically?)

Observations:
1) Kind of hard to keep up with the powerpoint slides when prof jumps around. YOu lose some of the functionality that you normally have in the program to go to a slide # or page #.

2) It is a lot of fun to use.

3) I like the recording feature (although I haven't played it back).

4) My handwriting is a disaster right now. I also try to write off the edge of the program sometimes. Hard to notice I am running out of screen.

5) I liked the color pallete in OneNote2007 on the left hand of the screen. Seems like there are less choices in the draw menu in OneNote 2010.

All in all, it was a little distracting for the first time, hopefully will get easier in subsequent classes. Seems like an improvement for me though.

1. I'm not sure that you can turn it off, but I've adjusted to holding my pen differently so that it's not in the way. My second finger is usually resting on the flat part below the button. And generally there is no need for the button if you don't mind being a little patient. If you press the pen to the screen and hold, wait for the circle by the pen to go all the way around, it's the same thing. I'll try to see if there is one.

2. I haven't had this problem, but I am also looking more at the screen, where my cursor is than where the pen is exactly. I'll get back to you on this one too.

3. You can adjust the brightness settings by double clicking on the battery icon at the bottom right hand side of the screen near the time. It will, of course, decrease your battery life if you turn up the brightness.


Oh, and regarding the formatting issues with Office 2007/2010 compared to 2003. There isn't a way to revert back to the 2003 headings. The change takes a bit to get used to, but I promise, it won't take too long if you use it. In some ways, it is more functional.
 
Has anyone tried Evernote for note-taking? I'd like to try it and get a fully cloud-based workflow, especially because it lets you upload, tag and search notes without actually plugging the device in and syncing it.

You might want to try it - it can do handwriting recognition and ocr on handouts that you scan/photograph in, so you can snap pictures of notes on the board or scan your handouts and take notes directly on them with your tablet. It also syncs your notes across all your stuff, so you can pull them up on your laptop, tablet, smartphone...

I've just started playing with it, and it seems pretty neat. I wish I'd found it earlier so I could have tried it out this semester.

Slow booting and blue screens tend to be more of a software issue as opposed to a hardware problem. And a laptop that is used daily on a battery, 2 years is about the max you can expect for reasonable battery life.

I retired my Thinkpad T40 this past december at just shy of 7 years old and still use it on occasion. It ran just as fast as when I got it. Had to replace one hard drive early on(warranty), and a fan around year 5($30). I wouldn't hesitate to buy another one.

And my personal opinion is that Lenovo/IBM(previously) has the best build quality for laptops this side of Apple.

We also have a pile of junk HP/Compaq laptops at my house from my sisters. I think the biggest factor for a computer staying fast has more to do with the way the person uses it as opposed to the brand.
 
there are no words to express how AWESOME this laptop is. my bf already said he wants one too :laugh:

i have barely gotten through learning OneNote and I havent even started on the new windows 7 features (first time user on that too). so far i just have one question.

When i'm in tablet mode, i noticed that if i double click on certain areas when i want to type, a little box comes up for me to write it with my stylus and then it converts to text and enters into the area i want. So i was able to navigate searches and go to websites. Then i got into trouble once I was in a private webpage, like gmail, or SDN. Now, i didnt expect to be able to write with my stylus on SDN lol that would take too long too. But checking mail seems so simple. Can i not enter my id and password for gmail to check my mail with my stylus? I mean, i know the tablet mode is mostly for notes or drawing so it's not a big deal if i cant check mail too lol but just wanted to make sure i'm not missing something!
 
Easy fix! I had to realize this too when I first used it. They keep the writing option hidden on the left hand side of the screen. All you see is a tiny silver sliver of something. Click on it, and the option to "hunt & peck" with your stylus, or physically write comes out. When you select the physically write option, under settings, you can do the "learn my handwriting" thing. It's about 50 sentences, but works beautifully!

1. Go to Control Panel from the Start Menu. Click on "Hardware & Sound". Under the category "Pen & Touch", click on "Change tablet pen settings". A new window will open up. Under "Pen Buttons", uncheck the option "Use the pen button as a right-click equivalent". If you'd like, you can change the other options a pen action will do under "Pen actions" if you want.

2. Under the same window as you were before, "Hardware & Sound", below Pen & Touch is "Tablet PC Settings". Click on "Calibrate the screen for pen or touch input". Under "Display", which comes up first, choose the "Calibrate" option to do it.

I remember someone asking about writing on a tablet when you're a lefty? If you don't like the orientation the computer automatically goes to when it goes into tablet mode, under the "Buttons" heading is where you will find how you change the way you want it to be oriented. Otherwise, you'll have to click the orientation button multiple times to get the setting you want each time.


I hadn't taken out my tablet until today for class since I don't keep it charged and have been playing piano instead of playing on the computer lately. So sorry for the late reply. Let me know if you have any other questions or if my instructions were unclear. 🙂

Not to change the subject off of tablets, but has anyone scanned their handwritten notes into OneNote? If you do that, say adding them as an "image" can you still search the text? Or convert it to text?

Yeah, it can read the text of an image and search for words in a scanned picture. It does convert to text, but it formats a little weird.

I've scanned notes personally, I just write my notes on a tablet.
 
Oh, I didn't know it could do that! Small chance in hell of it recognizing my handwriting but who knows.

Also, my sig fig's handwriting SUCKS, but he used it...and we converted it to text, AND IT READ IT!! i couldnt believe it lol i think it has some type of T9 thing that predicts words because i dont know how the heck it read it lol we tested it many times with his sloppiest writing. Now, the one thing it had a hard time reading was my name. Lets just say my name is "exotic" or w/e, very rare and i think that is why it had a hard time. But once i program it to know my name i think it will be fine. That is why i think he has this T9 thing because it was putting my name down as other normal words that were similar.

lol oya i wonder about that. the thing is...it should get "used" to the words i write. right? haha i dont even know but I'm sure Chii Chan does!!! I still havent finished my one note tutorial. but ya, i will try some scientific words!! will update...

Edit: ok i just wrote this sentence "Neuroanatomists usually consider the brain to consist of six main regions: the telencephalon (cerebral hemispheres), diencephalon (thalamus and hypothalamus), mesencephalon (midbrain), cerebellum, pons, and medulla oblongata." and it converted everything perfectly. yayy this is good news!

Haha, cool. I haven't tried the convert to text or searching an image that didn't come from a typed document before. Right now, I don't think it would like my physics equations and such. Plus I have things color coded for ease on my ray diagrams. I also never did the tutorial for OneNote. I prefer to just figure things out as I go. 😛

I'm curious what your name is now, BlacKat. It must have T9 though. Sometimes it starts interpreting what I wrote before I finish a word and changes it to the word I actually meant by the time I finish writing it. I'm still amazed by it.

OT: But I love how beautiful my ray diagrams for lenses/mirrors come out without a ruler! All you need is to set it to quad grid and use straight lines. 🙂

BTW, quad grid option is the best! I hate when my notes curve down because I'm incapable of writing in a straight line. I also hate in a more outline form, that my outlines curve toward the right and never line back up. Quad seems to fix it a little.

There is also a lined option that would be just like college ruled. If you print it out with whatever background you had on there, it eliminates it during printing.

really OT...but have to mention it. I am studying for physics midterm tomorrow... lenses, mirrors, refraction, interference etc. Nice to know someone in SDN land is in the same "place".

I had no idea about the grid stuff.. will look into it.
 
Nice! My midterm is next week. Since the quarter system and semester system apparently overlaps in some stuff, this is actually the third time I've studied this material. Once in high school, once during the second quarter of physics, and now during the second semester of physics. It's so boring now! All the electricity/magnetism stuff was new at least! That or I don't remember it from high school. 😛

Edit: Silly me. I should have told you how to find the ruled option. Under "Format" in the "File", "Edit", etc. options, go to "Rule Lines" to change it from "None" to whatever you'd like. I keep my notebooks on quad.

Oh! And, I don't know if you know this, but you can zoom in/out of OneNote similar to the iPhone/iPod Touch. Use two fingers to squeeze/pinch or pull out the page to zoom. I zoom out a little on the small quad setting so my small quad is even smaller since I write fairly small. Figured this one out by just randomly trying it out. =D

Man...that would've been useful when I took physics. A myriad of solid, dashed, dotted ("is that a dotted or a dashed line? Crap!"), and plussed lines was what that section of physics boiled down to in my notes. I still have no idea what the hell I was supposed to learn from it and to this day know nothing about reflection, refraction, minimization and maximization.

but if you're financially strapped, i'm sure the HP one is good too. it does have good reviews. just for reasons stated in my previous posts, i guess most of us decided to go with x200s

cowgirla-i need to reorder a case because the one i bought was 12" but with the 8 cell battery it sticks out 1" more so really i need a 13" 🙁 I'm giving my mom the one i ordered. If the new one i find is from HP i may take u up on your generous offer 😍
 
I'm planning on getting the HP since I can get a nicely configured new one on eBay for around $840 shipped (compared to $1200+ if I were to order one from HP with the same specs).
 
Well, I bit the bullet and bought an HP tm2t off eBay. It was $835 + free shipping, and with the Microsoft Cashback program I got $66 back, so the total was $769. For a similar configuration direct from HP it would cost $1200-1300. Here are the specs:

• Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit
• Intel Core 2 Duo SU7300 (1.30GHz, 800MHz FSB) w/Intel(R) Graphics Media Accelerator 4500MHD
• 4GB DDR3 System Memory

Not bad at all for $769! I'll post up a review once I get it and have a chance to play around with it a bit!
 
Just to let you know, in case you hadn't read the above posts...

OneNote's (2007) printout option is not compatible with any 64-bit system. They did fix this for the 2010 version. You can download the beta for the time being, or just wait. I think it's scheduled to release in June.

The computer sounds like a great deal! Let us know how fun it is to play with. 🙂

if i ordered my tablet right now directly from the lenovo site does this mean i will have the 2010 version and i wont need to worry about the printout option?
 
Do you guys know if you have to buy Microsoft Office through Lenovo if you choose to have them install OneNote?

My understanding is you get 2007 but get a free upgrade when 2010 comes out officially (still only beta). But I could be wrong.

No, OneNote is sold as a stand alone product as well. But I could be wrong.

edit: you can also get a new version of onenote 2007 from e-bay for $20. You will need an optical drive or do what chii chan said to dowload the trial and then put in your key. I know that works since I did it!

No. You will get a free upgrade to the 2010 version with your 2007 purchase. However, this will be available for download after it is released sometime in June. I purchased my tablet before you did yours, and I have a free upgrade. You should have one too.

No, you can buy it through Microsoft's website. Check the earlier pages, I posted a great student deal going on that gives you about 5 or 6 of the programs for about $60. I don't know if that promo has expired or not. For JUST the OneNote program, it is expensive. It's better to get a combo deal package like the student deal, or the Home & Student package. The Lenovo tablet doesn't have an optical drive on it, so you will have to either download it, or if it is already installed (with a trial period) register/activate it with a product key you already have or will get if you purchase the CD version.
 
Alright, I've had 3 days to play around with my HP tm2t and...

I LOVE IT!

Seriously, my opinion of HP is much different now than it was 4 days ago before I got this tablet. HP has really upped their game with this laptop (and their Envy line). Here's a quick run down.

Pros:

  • Keyboard is absolutely brilliant. Chiclet-style keyboard like the Macbook, but I honestly think it is superior to the Macbook keyboard.
  • This thing feels rock solid, something I'm not used to from HPs. The aluminum case is great.
  • The multitouch screen is really cool, and it really benefits from Window 7's new taskbar.
  • The Wacom active digitizer is great. Using OneNote is a COMPLETELY different experience... if you like OneNote on a standard computer, you will absolutely LOVE it with a tablet. It really makes the experience much better.
  • Although typing in tablet mode is slow, general computer usage with the pen is much quicker than a mouse, much less a touchpad.
Cons:


  • The touchpad, while a marked improvement from previous HPs I've used, still sucks. I contribute this to my Macbook, though, which even after 4 years has the best touchpad I've ever used. To be honest, though, I think this is a Windows issue, since I've noticed that the touchpad on my Macbook sucks in Windows, too. Not sure why they can't get it right in Windows.
  • Sometimes the multitouch gets annoying, like when I'm writing something and my palm hits the show desktop button (which apparently can't be disabled!). I don't want to disable the multitouch since it is so useful in OneNote.
  • Finally, like most computer manufacturers, HP loaded this laptop up with a ton of bloatware. I'm still trying to figure out what half of the stuff is, and I'm sure it will be an on-going process over the next few weeks.
Overall, I couldn't be happier with this laptop, especially for the price! I'd probably give this laptop a 3.5-4 out of 5 stars. I never thought I'd say this, but I would highly recommend this tablet to anyone who wants to give a tablet pc a try but doesn't want to spend over twice as much for the Lenovo x200.
 
Yay! Glad you like the tablet! I must agree though, that HPs come with too much crap already installed that you must then uninstall. 😛

I have the same issue with Lenovo. When I'm writing at the top of a page, my forearm always clicks the power/battery options. If I wear a sweatshirt, it takes care of the issue. It also doesn't happen if I'm writing toward the middle-bottom area of the screen.

You got the warranty right? My last HP (regular notebook) became trash because the screen switch was cheap. I could only see the top 1/3 of the screen. The rest was black. That was my only concern with getting an HP. It was a few years ago, so hopefully they solved that issue for tablets since it's way more essential.
 
Sometimes the multitouch gets annoying, like when I'm writing something and my palm hits the show desktop button (which apparently can't be disabled!). I don't want to disable the multitouch since it is so useful in OneNote.

Would hiding or moving the taskbar help with that?

When using the pen do you really need the multitouch? I find it a distraction and just use the pen on the lenovo. Maybe I just have big clumsy hands.

some of the buttons i push are super tiny, like Xing out of a window...i dunno how men could do that! lol but it is good to know that if i lost my pen i could use my finger instead of the nub (if i wanted). but also, i havent tried it yet...im behind with testing out my x200, but i think you can use two fingers like on an iphone to stretch/shrink things. i dont own an iphone so im not sure what else it could be used for lol

I really like being able to scroll down the page using multitouch. It makes scrolling with a pen in your hand much more fluid and natural than using the pen to scroll.

I've only got the standard 1 year warranty. I found the HP warranties too expensive. Why spend nearly $400 on a 3 year warranty for a $770 computer? Most electronics, if they are going to go bad, will go bad in the first year.
