I'm a Junior Computer Science student at Purdue University (currently a 3.3 gpa but working on improving it). I had initially decided not to go into medical because I didn't want to get involved in student debt, but as school has gone on I've begun to think that it wasn't the right choice.

I already know a fair amount of cs students are accepted, but my issue is my past grades. It was really hard for me to adjust to Purdue's competitive way of doing math, and because of that I failed my first few calculus classes. Eventually I retook them and dramatically improved them all (B+) but the F's are still going to be on my transcript.

Will those F's ruin any chance I have of being accepted despite the fact that I retook and improved them greatly?

I believe I saw a video interview with med school admissions representatives and they were asked this question.

The answer is that they want you to demonstrate competence. That means going through a post-bac program with a 4.0 and getting a top percentile on the MCAT. That should change their mind.

Besides that, build up a an impressive resume.

Bottom line, it won't ruin your chances. Every year some people get in with really low GPAs. They are few. But they get in.

It is not over. Acknowledge your mistakes and move on. You can always build yourself up to a point where your mistakes will actually make you look impressive for having overcome them.

Be advised though, you may need to stay in the game for a while. It could take you years of applying to get in. But no it's not over.

I would double check and see if that 3.3 GPA is considering some of those Bs replaced your previous Fs. For medical school the B+ and the F will average.
