Im an IMG doing a prelim surgery resident 2014-15. I didn't want to pursue surgery so I applied for anesthesia. I matched to an advanced position starting in 2016. I spoke with the program and they said my prelim 2014-15 year will fulfill the PGY-1 requirement. I will be completing the preliminary year.

The reason I'm posting this is because I have not performed well and have received stinging evaluations. my competency evaluation is also lower than my peers. In short I am scared that my anesthesia program will waive my match on the grounds of a poor preliminary performance. I was wondering if any on sdn was in a similar situation and if they had to go through the experience of a program request a waiver from nrmp.

Thanks

They can't waive your match. They're as committed to you as you are to them.

That said, if you somehow screw up enough this year to not get credit for the year, then they can walk away from you. But it's not like they're going to be looking for a reason to ditch you, unless you give them one.

Thanks for such a quick response. Thankfully the possibility of not getting credit for the year/getting dismissed hasn't come up but I know I'm in hot water. I feel so stupid for getting myself into this situation. I hope you're right. I also bombed my ABSITE but I don' think that should have any relevance to waiving an anesthesia spot

As mentioned already, you need 12 months of satisfactory performance to qualify for your prelim training for your anesthesia training. Whether or not your training is considered satisfactory is completely up to your prelim program and your anesthesia program. From what you've written above, you are at a very high risk of not getting full credit for the work you are doing without improvement.

If you don't get full credit for the year, or if you are terminated, you'll still have the 15-16 academic year to get the full 12 months. But, having failed out of a prelim GS position, you won't be in a very good position to try and get a new position.

Bombing your ABSITE won't affect your anesthesia match, but is unlikely to generate any love from your prelim program. You need to buckle down and improve your performance before it is too late.
