I am a freshman undergrad at Boston University and am pre med. I started out in the fall semester as pre med, taking chemistry and such, but didn't do so well and was concerned that I wouldn't get into to med school, even though it was my first semester only. So this semester I stopped taking pre med classes and am focusing on my film major but have now decided to go back to pre med because after MUCH thought it is what I truly want. My gpa for my first semester was a 2.6, which is why I was so concerned. This was also due to the fact that I found out I had celiac disease a month before I started college. I am now much healthier than I was then and am doing much better. Do you think it's still possible for me to still be considered by med schools even though my freshman gpa isn't that good?

IF you turn it around 100%, yes. A 2.6 freshmen year is going to raise eyebrows but if you can manage upwards of a 3.7 the rest of your college career, the 2.6 will be easily forgotten. It will take work but it is certainly doable. The celiac may be a decent excuse for the low grades but I wouldn't count on it. You did have a month to get things under control before starting college so the sympathy for you may be limited (especially since if you felt your health was not under control, you should have dropped to a part-time student or taken a semester off -- it's not like you got caught with an illness mid-semester or something).

relax homegirl. i was an f-up for at least THREE years, and they're still letting me be a doctor. shows what the admissions committees know! HAH!

just get your stuff together, regroup, and show an upward GPA trend starting next year...

Yeah seriously. The majority of people on these forums have screwed up at one point or another, and it was much worst than a 2.6 and numerous W's so don't worry. Just regroup, have an upward trend, and ENJOY college b/c you only live once and you don't want to look back thinking what could have been

Yes. If you really want it you have many more strikes than a poor freshman year GPA. But make sure you do this

You were a film major?

My girlfriend and I have made a few movies.

@ theWUbear, You get an F for originality. I can't count how many times I've seen that shtick on a message board. Just because your life isn't interesting, doesn't mean other people's isn't.

Hey, it's okay. I went to BU for undergrad, and yes, you're not the only one who had some bad grades at that school. The pre-med courses are pretty difficult there (and the grading curves are no help). I think the key with classes at BU is that it's not memorizing stuff, but understanding concepts. So, just make sure your study habits are good. However, if I could do it all over again, I would've taken my pre-reqs at an easier school during the summers. Realize that med schools do not care about where you take your pre-reqs.
