Wow, I just got a letter from UCHSC stating that I need to take the Summer 2006 Advanced English Course to be admitted to the School of Pharmacy for Fall 2006. I quote, "Students attending the Summer 2006 Advanced English Course will be admitted to the School of Pharmacy for Fall 2006 contingent only upon successful completion of the Course. Does this mean that I will definitely 100% accepted if I completed the English Course?

I guess having English as a second language has its disadvantage... DOH! Anyone else taking the Advanced English Course over the summer?

Jay -

It's probably best to call UCHSC to be sure, but the way it's worded, it seems like you will be granted admission if you take (and pass) the course.

Congrats! I'm glad to hear that you've been offered admission (conditionally at least). UCHSC seems like a cool school. 👍

Yea, Im planning to call them tomorrow. I just got the letter today ;p

 Congrats! Sounds to me like you're in. What did CU have to say?

I'll see you there when school starts. You'll be easy to spot. You'll be the one with the spiffy English skills. 🙂

Troy

I got one too... and we need eight of us for them to have this class! Hope there will be this class. crossing fingers. I am giving my work 2 wks notice!

Lol... This is the first time I actually hear a word "spiffy".

I called Beverly today, and she told me that I am basically done with my prerequisites. Well this means that I can drop all my spring courses knowing that I have finished all the prerequisites muahaha ;p.

I also asked Beverly whether they have ever cancelled the ESL Summer Course or not due to the insufficient number of students. She said that it never happened before, and even if the class is cancelled, my application will be deferred for fall 2007 enrollment.

The problem right now is to find a place to live =(... I am not from Colorado and doesn't have any relatives in Colorado. I hope I can get a place to live before May 30th. >.< Gawd I hope I pass that English class... It would suck so bad if I don't pass that class LMAO...

That is good news to hear about English class.

Moving is my concern, too.. My husband already left to Indonesia for medical mission and not coming back for 5 months. I have to move all stuff to storage .. and my work just put me to another training (diab pt stuff) that they were hoping me to work with bunch of diabetic patients for a couple months. So many small concern and exciting to get in the program. It's all good! 😀

You husband left to Indonesia?? Heh... I am from Indonesia. Which province does your husband go to?

He was there to treat tsunami victims last year, and met a lot of cool Indonesian translators, kids and elderly. He is exciting to reunite with them. We still keep in touch with them. In this time, he is going to several cities, include Banda Ache, Tawi Tawi, Jolo island, Nias island, Tarakan, Flores and East Timor. Good thing is I can break the lease by the law b/c he is in deployment.

I am thinking to ask for temp. housing from school. What about you?

Well, it depends on the availability on the student housing, though. If there's none available then I need to find a homestay or apartment around the campus.

congrats to all of you....and welcome to the thunderdome

btw, dont worry on the attendence, i believe that my class had 15+
and ive also heard that they were planning to limit the class to 10 people (that i am unsure of)

I am going to do my best to complete the summer program.... but do you know if anyone ever failed the course before?

Yea, I also wonder if anyone ever failed the summer course??? So, did you take the summer course Corradoracer? Can you give us a general ideas what to expect there? 🙂

I was poking around the school's website the other day and found the school newsletters. There's an article about the ESL class. It looks immersive which is what will really help you guys out. I don't think I'd worry too much about failing it. Just grab the class by the gonads and squeeze for all it's worth.

There are two kinds of language skills - active (which involves speaking and writing) and passive (which involves listening and reading). You guys obviously have a passive fluency in English because you got through a pre-pharm curriculum. I get the feeling this program is meant to help you develop (or perfect) your active English skills.

Look at this as an opportunity rather than as a hurdle. Oh! Here's the link to the bulletin (the article is on page 2):

Twester,
Thanks for info. 🙂 I had a phone interview with Ms. Seeber. It is nice to know she is going to be our ESL prof.

I have a friend who was invited to apply. It's a program that's being funded by some corporation (can't remember which one) that gives some instruction in biological sciences. I think the people who were invited were either not interviewed or not admitted. My friend is hoping it will improve his chances next year.

that program if anything will make the first semester a true walk in the park (also knew a few people who completed that).

first semester is cake if you have a bs degree....but beware of skills, it has potential to kick you in the ###

what do you mean by skills...??

So did they get any positive result from the program (i.e., interview or acceptance?). How much do you know about this program? Thanks for all the info.
