For those of you who matched in the past few years, How confident were you that you were going to match where you ended up at? What kind of feedback did you get from the programs? How do programs communicate with you about where you will rank on their list?

Check out this thread.

By the tone of it, it seems like most PD's will say anything to get you to believe that you will be ranked #1. This gives them their choice for "pick of the litter" when it comes time for them to rank their applicants.

What I'm asking is:
Did people go buy a house before match day- were they "that confident"?

Take this for what it is: personal anecdotal experience, but one of my closest friends and his partner put a bid on a house the day before the match and ended up matching at his fifth choice. Fortunately, they were outbid and not locked into a house they weren't going to live in. We were all completely shocked that he didn't match at the home program. Another guy in our class built a house with his wife here in town and then matched in Southern California (also not his top choice).

Now, plenty of people who graduated last year owned houses here and got what they wanted. But my honest opinion is: the match is stressful enough. Why add the additional stress of owning a home if you don't know for sure you're going to be able to live in it a year from now?

Just out of curiosity... did you even read the posts in the link I gave you?
