Confused about internship?

Have a question for you guys? What is the year of internship, is that residency? or Do you have to do a year of internship after med school and than you get a residency? Hope someone can clear this up for me. Thanks.

Internship is the first year of residency in most programs (it used to be a more formal thing). For some residencies you have to do a transitional year before you actually begin training in your desired specialty (which is probably a hold-over from the old internship thing). Hope that answers your question.
