Hey guys,

So I'm confused about how residency works. What are the time durations for each field? I know that the residency training for both IM and Peds is three years, but suppose I want to do general cardiology, derm, or radiology?

With good USMLE scores, can I go straight into these fields from med school?

Or is it required to complete an IM or peds residency first and then apply for a cardiology fellowship of 2 years in order to become a general cardiologist?

I am not planning to specialize in a particular field as of now. I am happy with being a general pediatrician, cardiologist, dermatologist etc.

How does this process work?

Please let me know asap! Appreciate your responses =)

Oh just a dermatologist?

Why'd you post two of the same threads? Did they move one from another board?

OP, it worries me that you are already looking to settle for just general dermatology. Don't hold yourself back. Shoot for the stars.

OP, you probably aren't aware of this, but people are joking about you mentioning dermatology because derm is basically the most competitive residency.

There are several paths to different specialties. A lot of the time, you will have to do a residency in IM or peds, and from there do a fellowship in cardiology, GI, critical care, etc. to become a specialist. You can also do residencies straight from med school in fields such as surgery, emergency medicine, anesthesiology, radiation oncology, family practice, neurosurgery, otolaryngology, neurology, ophthalmology, urology, radiology, dermatology, etc. It's not always easy to predict what careers are accomplished via residency + fellowship or just straight residency. Your best bet is to look up the fields you're interested in to figure out how they work specifically.
