hey folks,

can someone please tell me how similar questions in the real exam are to Uworld...

i am thinking about giving up my plan to just stick on Uworld and FA only and extend literature and qbanks...

some of my colleagues told me that questions in the real exam are not that similar to Uworld and using only FA and Uworld will give me a horrible score and worst case probably will let me fail ...

i am little bit confused now... only 7 weeks from now on ... i now nearly every Uworld question by heart now but is this really not enough for a high score ... ?

Do an NBME and assess it for yourself. I personally thought they were fine, even if not "in the same style." They test similar concepts, and I really doubt you'll fail if you're comfortable with UW and FA.

NBME... i don't have money for this, unfortunately.

Medical education cost: 200k
Earnings as a doctor: 200-300k
Penalty for not matching: making 150-250k less

Find a way to get $40 - it could save you $150,000. Now isn't the time to try and save pennies. Ask one of your classmates or a relative for $40. Go wash cars for a saturday morning. Sell something on ebay. Don't buy any coffee for a month or two Etc.

What John said x 10000000, "not having the money" for USMLE prep really isnt an option the way residency is set up these days...

i want to score high without this NBME stuff... what is this NBME stuff all about anyway. so they can predict me a score and maybe it tells me how much i know. but that won't help me for step1 prep... ah anyway, i will just stick on my plan an go for it with FA and Uworld...

no risk no fun ....

Tell us how it works out.

Does anyone by chance have explanations for the NBMEs (6 or later!) I tried looking for it in the offline versions...but can't seem to find any explanations, though I'd read of people talking about it in other threads.

do the NBME. some good advice in this thread.

i wish i had spent more time with NBME and seeing how the questions were structured, and how vague some of them were. I found them to be quite different from UW. learning all the concepts is great from UW, but a big part of taking the USMLE is how you take the test and how you handle the vague questions.

This is a terrible time to talk to your colleagues--they will only inject fear and doubt into your mind at this point. Stick to your original plan, you will be just fine. SDN way over estimates the "importance" of taking NBMEs.

I couldn't agree with you more about SDNers over-estimating the importance of NBMEs... because people here are by and large wanting to match into plastics at MGH.....

But on the other hand, it is really important to do NBME exams... just so you know where you are prior to the real deal.... for instance if you want to match into Stanford for rads, knowing where you are score-wise is important - just to get a ball park. You don't want to get a false sense of security that you killled your first 2yrs and FA... and then find out you got a 190 on step1 - no chance of retaking it. So in that sense, I say NBME is very important.

The reason NBMEs are so important is not ONLY for your score prediction.

It's for the purpose of using the FEEDBACK to target your weaknesses.

You'd be surprised at how quickly your score can improve as soon as start hitting subjects that NBME flags as being your weaker areas.

The NBME gives you a breakdown for different topics?? Thought it was just a percentage and a NBME score?

The 2 NBMEs I took didn't correlate to my final score at all, but I will say they are tremendously helpful just for the experience. It gets you in the mindset to be able to take a 7+ hour test, which is absolutely draining. Granted these tests aren't as long, but it simulates the pressure and exhaustion you'll be feeling. Highly recommend taking these.
