Hey there for anyone who can help me,
I' kind of in an odd position with school and life right now so ill just get to the point. Basically, I'm pre-med at a state university that isn't even that great. I have a 3.5 GPA Biology / Math major. I have been doing research in Biophysics / Cancer Research for 2 years and should hopefully have a publication by graduation. I also volunteer at the children's museum on weekened playing with children and taking care of exhibits. Now the pickle. When i started my undergrad school i was one of those kids who made mistakes in high school. I knew i always wanted to do medicine, but this was not my first choice school. I worked to get out of the school. Finally this year I got into Stony Brook. Which was great for me! I mean i figured when i go there i can step up my game and do everything i planned and try for med school. However, Stony Brook is being a jerk and my parents dont want to strap me with 50 G in debt and suggested i stay at my current school and finish there (they are giving me full tuition plus 2000 in my pocket). This is a major set back because not only do i feel like my med school chances go down like crazy but my academic life as well. I am a commuter 3 hours everyday so theres not a lot of room to do much. So now I really feel like medical school is a maturity thing as well, and to be honest if you asked me if i am ready for med school in 2 years i'd have to say no. I don't feel prepared or ready. This led me to consider an mph then medical school and i have read a lot of threads prior to writing this and im still confused. I love math as well as biology and what better way to help me understand and learn how to help me develop some of these skills in biostats or epi. Do i even have the credentials for Mph programs? Bah!! Am i even thinking straight? 🙁

Help?

If you don't feel prepared or ready for medical school you should get a job (preferably in a health field) and not another degree. Getting an MPH would cost you even more money and is not the best degree to help you get into med school.

You have time. Take a deep breath and then make an appointment with a career counselor.

This.

In addition, calm down. You're only a 2nd year (right?). You have two more years to figure things out. You'll have a clearer picture then.

As for the question of whether or not your you are significantly worse off at your current school versus another (like Stony Brook) really is a matter of perspective. Will it hurt your chances of going to a grad program like Harvard? Sure. But I doubt Stony Brook is that much "better" of a school for the expense you'll face. And the added expense you'll incur likely isn't worth the "prestige". School name only matters so much, it's what you do with your time, quality of course load, GPA, and the standardized tests that matter most, regardless of school name.

I agree with Stories. At the end of the day, its your GPA, MCAT, and LOR's that will get you in. Don't worry about. Do well wherever you are. I am at Columbia studying epidemiology. If you have questions, feel free to ask.
