So far, it seems about 50% of people I ask tell me that I should not state that I previously applied to medical schools, since I was never looked at by an admissions committee. Some say that "technically" I have applied. I understand this technicality, but is there any legitimate reason why I should consider myself someone who has previously applied to a medical school? I just don't want to put myself at a disadvantage for no good reason. Any feedback would be really appreciated.

If you applied before you must state that you have previously applied before. Did you withdraw your application previously? You assume that we know your story, you might consider providing additional information.

what do you mean you "were never looked by an admissions committee" ? Did you submit the primary and secondary application? is so, then you are considered someone who applied and you must list that when re applying.

I submitted secondaries to a few schools, but withdrew before being considered (due to a low MCAT score). I really don't see the point in calling myself a reapplicant, but tons of people are acting like it would be a crime not to.

Since your primary was transmitted, it could potentially pose a problem if you do not indicate that you are a reapplicant because the adcom may have access to your personal statement, your previous application, etc. I haven't a clue on how you should describe yourself, but if I were in your shoes I would most likely mark that I have previously applied. Good luck.

For many schools you're considered a reapplicant if your AMCAS was verified and transmitted to the school, regardless of whether or not you submitted their secondary. In fact I think this is the case at most schools.

Assuming you submitted the secondaries to a few schools, then that means you have submitted primaries. As long as you have submitted primaries, you have applied even if you withdrew your application. You must list that you're a re applicant. Schools would know anyway if you've applied before, you don't want that to cause problems now would you? it's best you list yourself as re applicant and no harm done. Good luck

Alright, thanks guys. I'm not really against calling myself a reapplicant. It's just that I would obviously rather not, and some people are saying that if you did not receive a decision from an adcom, you haven't previously applied. I guess you could understand my confusion.

I don't think it matters a bit since there are many people that are reapplicants. Just make sure you read questions carefully and answer honestly because a false answer WILL be a problem.

I'm with NickNaylor on this one---many are reapplicants and are, in some instances, looked favorably upon because they have "grown" during their time "off" from medical school admissions. Good luck! I would also say you are a reapplicant, since you sent in your AMCAS.

to be most truthful, you should list yourself as a reapplicant.

I came across some stats over the weekend that show that re-applicants have the same likelihood of being admitted as first time applicants so there is no scarlet letter that will mark you as less worthy or anything like that.
