I am really having a tough time determining what school to attend. I want to go to NYU for the experience but everyone seems to say bad things about NYU on this website. Which school would you choose? Any feedback would be helpful.

nova! if i didn't get into my state school i would so be there

Im in the same situation, I want to go to NYU for the experience etc... but im not sure if the PROS out way the CONS...this thread shoudl be moved to dental so we can hear some feedback from nova students.

ps. when i told my dentist from ny who went to NYU i was going on an interview at NOVA..he said never heard of it...do we want to go to a school where dentists in the north have never ehard of nova???

NYU gets a bad rap on here, but usually only from pre-dents who have only heard rumors and have been there once for an interview at best. In my opinion you need to take what you here from these people with a grain of salt, because I dont think they really know what they are talking about. Every student and alum with which I have spoken to,that actually attends school there has had mostly good things to say about NYU. No school is perfect. My point is make an informed decision about where to go for yourself, and dont put to much stock into bias and rumors. Talk to people who know first hand. Good luck.

The 3 biggest negatives about NYU seem to be 1) cost 2) large class size 3) lack of training in root canals.

1) There's no way around it, NYU costs a lot of money as does living in NYC. Nova being a private school, I would have to assume that it would cost a lot as well, although not as much.

2) Depending on what type of person you are and what type of environment you do better in, the large class size can be a positive or negative. Personally, I don't mind the large class size. I like to be able to hide out if I choose to, but I also take the initiative to meet my professors.

3) Having such a large patient pool, I doubt that you would lack any clinical experience. In fact, I would imagine that you would see tons of cases you would see in your future practice as well as some cases you may never see again.

I don't know much about Nova, so I will only say some of the positives I've heard. Most of this is what an oral surgeon was telling me.

1) The dental school is well-integrated into the other professional schools (med, nursing, etc). This provides you with training not only in treating dental conditions, but also in seeing how conditions of the oral cavity affect the overall health of the patient and vice versa.

2) Brand new school with very nice facilities.

For whatever reason, NYU seems to be "picked on" the most on this website. Maybe some of the people have valid reasons, but due to the large number of posts that are all centered on disproven rumors, I would have to believe that many of the people are simply adding to the rumor mill.

But to be fair, maybe I'm slightly biased b/c NYU is the only school I've been accepted to thus far. However, I can honestly say that I really liked what I saw on-line, in the brochure, and at my interview as well as what I heard from NYU students.

Look I have been to both schools and I examined both carefully:
Results: I loathed Nova and loved NYU

Look at NIH rankings which matter probably more than predents' illiterate advice. NYU is always either fifth or sixth right after Umich, harvard, Upenn and and UCSF. Secondly, you have more time studying at NYU because of half Fridays (you are dismissed at noon) and plastinated anatomy. Oh and the NYU dental library is sexier than Pamela Anderson (I know I am a geek).
I, myself, am leaning toward NYU for sure but I also might make a deposit at Case as well due to lack of complete certainty. But Nova has nothing good to it. The administration is never there to help me (I know this from experience) and the cost of living in Fort Lauderdale is not less than NYC when I asked the students. The tuition however is more managable at Nova.

hope that helps

I'm in the same situation. NYU or NOVA? I hear bad things about both Nova and NYU, which is really discouraging b/c those are the only two schools I applied to. I live in South Florida which is what makes NOVA so applealing to me. But at the same time a lot of people have never even heard of NOVA so I don't know what to do.

Oh, but there is no way that the cost of living in ft. lauderdale is about the same as in nyc. That's just false. Ft. lauderdale isn't cheap, but its no NYC.
